What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

I thought Don Juan's Reckless Daughter showed her out of control, probably due to drugs and alcohol. I wonder if that's why she disappeared from the scene for a few years. Still, Hejira is a true highlight of her career. -

Also August 23: From the moment he picks up his guitar, Thom Rotella's passion for music is palpable. Every phrase is crafted with intuitive care and precision that reflect a total commitment to his art. Each performance is an intimate journey into the expressive potential of jazz, where every chord tells a story and every solo speaks directly to the listener. Beyond his solo work, Rotella's collaborations with legendary artists and contributions to various projects cover an extraordinarily wide spectrum of music and entertainment heavy-hitters including Stanley Turrentine, Tommy Tedesco, Frank Sinatra, Burt Bacharach, Bette Midler and countless others. His compositions and his playing have been featured in high-profile television and film projects such as Family Guy, Ellen DeGeneres, Sex and the City, Criminal Minds and Altos (2015), underscoring his ability to craft memorable and communicative music. Thom Rotella continues to inspire and innovate, as evidenced on his HighNote Records debut recording, Side Hustle. With the remarkable organist Bobby Floyd and the propulsive drumming of Roy McCurdy, Rotella swings, smolders and sizzles through a set of imaginative original tunes and standards, with HighNote regulars Eric Alexander and Jeremy Pelt on hand to welcome him to the label.

Release date July 5: The origin of this album goes back to Texas in the early 90s where young baritone student Frank Basile at North Texas Univ. met for the first time his hero baritonist Gary Smulyan. Their friendship culminates here in a studio date in NJ in late 2023.“I was really just so happy to be there playing with him” declares Smulyan the mentor. “His passionate sound and fresh ideas make Alternative Contrafacts a set well worth picking up, particularly by straightahead jazz collectors.” (S. Yanow – NYCJR) If you have been following Byars’ career on this label, you will realize this is his fourth album with this unique sextet of four horns, bass and drums without chord instrument. Byars’ adept ensemble writing skills provide one of a kind harmony source to the band. “Because he knows his musicians so well, Byars is masterful in his writing, blending the reeds and trombone in intricate ensembles while letting the soloists all shine throughout.” (Ken Dryden – NYCJR on SCCD 31929 R & B in the 20s)

Release date July 19: I'm proud to be part of Criss Cross, Antonio Farao says of his maiden voyage for the label. For the occasion, which transpired in Meudon Studios in Paris in July 2023, the Milan-based pianist, then 58, convened an equivalently virtuosic trio comprising bassist John Patitucci and drummer Jeff Ballard, presented them with eight originals and two standards, and let them loose. Each member operates at a creative peak on this lyric, kinetic, beautifully proportioned 65-minute recital. Titled Tributes, Fara•'s Criss Cross debut is closer in feel and attitude to the albums Black Inside, Thorn and Next Stories, recorded for Enja between 1998 and 2001, where Fara• joined forces, respectively, with top-of-the-pyramid, New York-seasoned masters Ira Coleman and Jeff Watts, Drew Gress and Jack deJohnette, and Ed Howard and Gene Jackson. Functioning completely as a peer, he addresses the dialects of his pianistic heroes - universal "postbop" influences as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans and Kenny Kirkland, as well as Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, Lennie Tristano, and Martial Solal - on their own terms of engagement, with the fluency of a native speaker. He assimilates their styles, refracts them into a personal argot, alchemizing challenging rhythms and highbrow harmony into graceful melodies. He eschews ironic deflection and gratuitous structural complication, sustaining an attitude of in-the-moment creation and a fierce will to swing. The Album was recorded July 26, 2023 at Studio de Meudon, Paris. Recording engineer Julien Basseres. Sound engineer Mike Marciano did the mixing and mastering at Systems Two in NYC. Photography by Marco Glaviano. Release date August 16: Like it's predecessor, Painter of Dreams features two highly reworked standards along with six recent melody-forward compositions, to which Tsiganov applies his signature blend of radical reharmonization, mixed meters, shifting tempos, and changing keys. Otherwise, this ambitious recital presents documents several "firsts." For one thing, Tsiganov expands beyond the saxophone-trumpet-piano-bass-drums format, scoring five of the eight selections for either three or four horns. For another, he broadens his tonal palette beyond the almost entirely acoustic soundscape of his prior Criss Cross oeuvre, liberally weaving the Rhodes and Minimoog into the flow, as well as the preternaturally flexible voice of Hiske Oosterwijk, who also contributes two lyrics. Also, for the first time as a leader, Tsiganov augments the luminous trumpeter-flugelhornist (and 13-time Criss Cross leader) Alex Sipiagin on the front line with alto sax titan Miguel Zen¢n, who plays for the entirety of the proceedings, and - on three pieces - the transcendent Chris Potter on tenor and soprano saxophones.

Release date August 23: Trumpet player, bandleader, composer, and arranger Tom Harrell picked up rave reviews for 2022's Oak Tree, and here he follows it up with another ambitious, hard-to-resist album, once again made up entirely his own remarkable compositions. Harrell is supremely regarded, not for playing loudly, fast, or high, but rather for his extraordinary talent at fashioning ravishingly beautiful auricular shapes with a wonderfully expressive tone and depth. He is also an exceptionally fine arranger, crafting scores embroidered with felicities of detail and an inevitability which are unique in jazz. Teamed here for the second time with Venezuelan-born pianist Luis Perdomo, featuring the tenor saxophones of Danya Stephens and Mark Turner, the guitar of Charles Altura and regular collaborators, German-Nigerian bassist Ugonna Okegwo and American drummer Adam Cruz, Harrell and his associates emphasize the diverse musical influences of the compositions with a versatility that vividly displays their common strength.

I've found most over the counter cough syrups to be useless, but I found one on Amazon that really works: Buckley's. It's expensive and tastes astonishingly awful, but it works. I found that it interrupts the cough syndrome (coughing because your throat's irritated from coughing), and allowed me to sleep at night. It's worth checking out. Read the Amazon reviews: people are amazed at how awful it tastes - they're pretty funny.

The liner notes to Last Date (Limelight) say "Eric Dolphy had arrived in Berlin from Paris on June 27. He was four days behind schedule as he hadn't been feeling too well, and Leo Wright was subbing for him. Two days later, on June 29th, Eric died suddenly and unexpectedly. Leo was here in July, and he told me that he reached the hospital at ten past seven in the evening, just ten minutes after Eric died. The doctors told Leo later that Eric died of diabetes, and had probably never suspected his condition." So there at least is one first hand account: Leo Wright recounting what the doctors told him.

Kurt Masur - The Complete Warner Classics Edition, disc 60. I'm finding that Teldec recorded the orchestra a little too far away - there's more room reverberation than if miked closer, therefore more echo and less detail. Do you think differently? Just curious.
