I agree. I worked in a jazz record store in lower Manhattan in the late 70's - early 80's, and most Muse releases didn't sell very well, so perhaps Fields was just paying a fair amount. I don't know who else would have released so many David Schnitter or Ricky Ford albums. I thought Muse did a great job in supplying a steady stream of soul jazz and organ jazz albums - music ignored by the New York press but still loved at clubs in Newark and Harlem.
Nope, sorry, try again. I will say this: the trumpeter on #1 also plays on #12 of this BFT.
If you're curious about Preminger, you might want to check out Michael Feinberg's "Blues Variant" (also on Criss Cross). Preminger plays on it, and the band does a version of "High or Booze." https://www.crisscrossjazz.com/album/1413.html
You are correct that it's Noah Preminger! The track is from the album "Sky Continuous," recorded 11/9/21, released 2022.
And the track is track #2 on the album "High or Booze;" correct again.
Correct!
I think GG was primarily a "licks" player. He had a certain number (not that many) of riffs that he'd recycle in his solos. I don't think he had the chops to be a full-time improvising jazz musician. As for Idle Moments being such a great record, credit should probably go to Duke Pearson.
Don't get me wrong: I have most of what GG recorded and enjoy it, but I recognize his limitations.
Really liked your responses, Dub Modal. You really caught the spirit of a lot of these. #1 is very recent (2022). #10: the saxist is young for jazz (34 at the time of recording); I think he's a good, strong player who can grow with time. #13: I'm sure the guitarist loves GG, and this tune was originally on an album by one of GG's running mates.
I remember a great Corman quote. He was giving instructions to a new young director, and said something like this: Imagine how much you'd have to spend to make this scene come out great. Now, imagine how much you'd have to spend to make the scene come out OK. Now, imaging how much it would cost to simply get the image onto film. That's what I want you to spend.
