  1. Release date January 12: Generation Y is a band concept that was conceived back in 2019 with the goal promoting the next generation of dynamic talent from the top conservatories in NYC and beyond. Led by Ulysses Owens Jr. who is a Multi Grammy Award-winning Drummer, Producer, Educator and Cultural Entrepreneur. Serving at The Juilliard School in the role of Small Ensemble Director within the Jazz Department for the last 8 years, has given Ulysses a front row seat to this Generation's top talent. The material on this album is a culmination of repertoire from Ulysses' influences and mentors like Mulgrew Miller, Roy Hargrove, George Cables, and of course the great Art Blakey. This Generation Y is an updated model of the Jazz Messengers, and many of these band members also perform in Ulysses' big band, and he met many of them at The Juilliard School. This album also features a few original compositions from Luther Allison who is an emerging talent performing with Samara Joy as her pianist, and the album also features a classic from Louis Armstrong titled Heart Full of Rhythm featuring Milton Suggs. This album is a culmination of repertoire that has been performed by this band around the world over the last 4 years and to add another level of nostalgia; it was recorded at the Legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studios in Englewood, NJ. Charles, Play! is pianist Chen's debut album. The album represents how Charles approaches play: both very serious and very fun. Listeners will hear catchy compositions, danceable arrangements, & dynamic solos. Charles, Play! showcases the joy of creation and the fun of play. The Stellar band is comprised of Ralph Moore on tenor saxophone, Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washignton on drums. Release date February 16: Love is the organic thread that ties the repertoire together. You could say this is a love letter to my wife Margaret and my daughter Mary (pictured on the cover) to whom the title track Wonderful is dedicated. It is also meant to shine a particularly bright light on my daughter Mary, who is multiply disabled and truly Wonderful. I chose the titles for their significance to my life's journey after my daughter Mary made her entrance 19 years ago - a journey that has proven to me, without a doubt, that love is the most powerful force in the universe. I can't even begin to list all the incredible things I've learned from her, but it was my love for her that led me to start the Disability Pride Parade in New York City. The idea was to bring large numbers of the disability community out for a joyous day of celebrating who and what they really are: just another diverse and beautiful aspect of humanity. I hoped that once non-disabled people saw this big party coming down the street, they would want to join it, and that is exactly what happened. Once the hang was on, barriers and divisions fell away, and the word disability began to be redefined. When I started out, I had no idea how to create a parade or a non-profit organization, but through Mary I found strengths in myself that I didn't know I had. When people thank me for my work creating the parade, I always tell them it wasn't me - it was Mary. Mike LeDonne Trumpeter Jim Rotondi has been a major figure in the world of jazz for over 30 years, both in New York and on the international scene. His sound, soul, and sense of swing have been in demand as leader and sideman all over the world. For his new album for Cellar Music, Rotondi has joined forces with arranger Jakob Helling and the Notes & Tones Orchestra to record some incredible versions of his own compositions with big band and strings. For NYC based pianist Steve Ash, the trio is the ultimate format for creative expression. On his new album for Cellar Music, Ash partners with bassist Harvie S and drummer Alvester Garnett, two valued musical associates who bring a wealth of experience and vibrancy to the recording. Recorded in Ash's living room, with Harvie S expertly engineering the session, 'You And The Night' eschews studio standards. Yet the music offers a crispness and clarity to rival those productions.
  2. Release date January 19: The album features eight new compositions by Halvorson, performed with her sextet Amaryllis; the improvisatory band that performed on her critically praised 2022 albums Amaryllis and Belladonna comprises Halvorson, Patricia Brennan (vibraphone), Nick Dunston (bass), Tomas Fujiwara (drums), Jacob Garchik (trombone), and Adam O’Farrill (trumpet). Labelmate Laurie Anderson also is featured on the album track “Incarnadine.”“All the music on Cloudward was written in 2022, mostly in the fall and winter, when things started moving forward. Life felt like a creaky machine starting up again,” she continues. “Air travel, however chaotic, had resumed, and we were once again cloudward. Performances and tours and recordings were happening after a long hiatus and with a renewed sense of gratitude. This band, for me, was quite simply working, both musically and personally, and the main thing I felt while writing the music was optimism.”
  3. I don't have any first-hand experience for an informed opinion, but I do have a suggestion: Go to a computer superstore, such as MicroCenter, or an electronics retailer, such as Best Buy. The problem with Amazon is they basically sell only no-name Chinese devices, and don't sell more established consumer brands. I experienced this when I needed an external CD drive for my iMac. I bought a Chinese no-name from Amazon, and the thing was loud, pokey, and not assembled very well. I returned that and went to MicroCenter, where I bought an LG drive that's worked flawlessly. Amazon doesn't carry LG. It's hard to notice an absence. You might be pleasantly surprised at the selection (and perhaps the knowledge) at a retailer.

  8. On January 19, Rhino is reissuing Gil Evans - Svengali in its Quadio series.

  10. Just donated $50.
  11. Huh. Thought I saw it on UMG's website, but I don't see it now. Thanks. I wasn't aware of it. Although my suggestion would stretch for more years and encompass other labels.
  12. Now that Universal owns/controls Blue Note, Fantasy and Impulse, Mosaic could release: The Complete Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Wayne Shorter It would comprise: Africaine The Big Beat Like Someone I Love A Night In Tunisia Meet You At The Jazz Corner Of The World vols. 1 & 2 Pisces Roots And Herbs The Witch Doctor The Freedom Rider Jazz Messengers (Impulse) Three Blind Mice vols. 1 & 2 Mosaic Buhaina's Delight Caravan Ugetsu Free For All Kyoto Indestructible Hmmm, that would be a huge box. Studio Sessions only would comprise 15 albums - still huge, but possibly 10 CDs.
  13. Mike LeDonne. Primarily a pianist, he's made at least two great dates on organ: Also, don't forget the track on Blue Note's "The Lost Sessions": Ike Quebec's "Blues On Trial" with Gene Harris of The 3 Sounds on organ.
  14. Have you tried using a powered USB hub? I do exactly this scenario (Mac, external CD drive connected to powered hub, rip CDs through iTunes/Music to external HD) and it works fine. FYI, I use this hub: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NGQWL2/
  15. Looks like I'll be getting this today.
  16. I migrated to SSDs when I found EHDs failing sooner than before. I had a 4 TB Western Digital EHD fail in less than a year. Sure there's a warranty, but that's not the point: I buy hardware to be dependable. As someone wrote in an Amazon comment, EHDs are mechanical devices and will fail - the question simply is when. So far, I've had no problem with SSDs. Of course, I have a regular backup schedule. Because an SSD is essentially just a chip, there can be innovative ways of using them. For example, I've been intrigued by this, currently $299.99 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-Echo-20-Thunderbolt-SuperDock/dp/B0C9VTDXY6/ref=sr_1_1?crid=QR1G3ZHRPB3N&keywords=Sonnet+Echo+20+Thunderbolt+4+SuperDock&qid=1702395646&s=electronics&sprefix=sonnet+echo+20+thunderbolt+4+superdock%2Celectronics%2C106&sr=1-1&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.17d9e15d-4e43-4581-b373-0e5c1a776d5d It's an enclosure for an internal SSD card (card not included) built into a multi-purpose dock; primarily intended for laptop users. I don't own it.
  17. Reinhard Goebel Complete Archiv box, disc 7.
  18. Before you judge your My Book defective, try reformatting it and starting over (copying from your backup). I have no use for the software they load on the EHDs, and perhaps that's the source of the problem. One problem I've found with playing music from iPhones (as opposed to iPods) is if you're in the middle of a long track and stop listening, the iPhone won't remember where you left off on the track, and will start again at the track's beginning when you resume listening.
  19. Kurt Masur - The Complete Warner Classics Edition, disc 23.
  20. The Decca Sound - The Piano Edition, disc 33.
  21. Same with me. On my iMac desktop, through iTunes/Music I access my 4 TB SSD (2.4 TB currently used), which is automatically backed-up nightly to a second 4 TB SSD. I can listen to the music through my iMac, or send it to my stereo using AirPlay.
  22. You might want to look into an SSD instead of a spinning platter read by an arm (EHD). An SSD has no mechanical components that can break (or fall asleep). For years, a 4 TB SSD was prohibitively expensive, but they're currently far more reasonably priced (indeed, that's the reason EHD prices have fallen further). A Crucial X8 4TB Portable SSD is now available on Amazon for $199.99.
