  1. Nice to see the Black Saint / Soul Note homepage back. It had been under reconstruction for a long time. BTW, some OOP titles will be reissued, but on CD-R only: http://www.blacksaint.com//News/CD+RE-PRESSING/1008
  2. Too bad you won't appreciate this: http://www.planetcanadice.com/Skits/KJOffer.mp3 Maybe the Zenph robot will re-record the Köln Concert one day http://zenph.com/index.html
  3. These seem to be the Laserlight/Delta Music reissues that were released a couple of years ago Here's one example: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/hnum/6101213 Good sound, great price.
  4. What a terrible loss. My sincere condolences to you and your family, Jim.
  5. Possibly bad news: the german customs administration has withdrawn it's announcement. It could be that it was a misinterpretation of the new rules on their part, that the 150€ limit would only concern the customs duties but not VAT, which is the major part of what needs to be paid when importing goods. Other customs administrations did not make any announcements. I've read the regulations but it's quite difficult to understand. It all depends if VAT falls under the definition of "import duties". The germans thought so, because they call VAT on imported goods an "import VAT", while other countries don't seem to make this distinction. http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUri...20040501:EN:PDF They still have 6 months left to clear things up ...

  7. No, two guys together should be ok, as long as they come from the same continent.

    Bennie Maupin

It would be so great having Maupin's two Mercury albums from 1977 and 1978, Slow Traffic To The Right and Moonscapes on CD. I have them only as crappy vinyl rips on MP3, and these are among the albums I listen to most with my MP3 player. Great outdoor summer music http://www.discogs.com/release/1051596 http://www.discogs.com/release/1130469 BTW, the Mike Nock "Almanac" CD is also becoming hard to find.
  9. For many OJC recordings, I've found the K2 remaster to be the best one among the "affordable" reissues, excluding 45rpm LP sets, DCC CDs and XRCDs. I've also found them superior to most Fantasy SACD reissues, which are generally a disappointment in terms of mastering. I don't have much experience with the Fantasy RVG series, but the few CD's I've heard did not encourage me to explore it further. Some sound poor, some OK, none really outstanding. The chance that they represent a sonic upgrade over the regular OJC CD are low, not to speak of the K2.
  10. I've heard a japanese 24bit remaster of "Mingus at Antibes", and it sounded horribly bright and thin compared to a european late 90's reissue.
  11. In my experience, later CD "remasters" of most Mingus Atlantic sessions don't sound like new transfers but rather as if the existing transfers were tweaked a bit (more treble generally). I have a 1998 european reissue of Pithecanthropus Erectus which sounds poor as well (for 1956 studio standards).
  12. I've never reported one, but if suspicious cases get reported to Ebay more often, it will prevent sellers from taking the risk of shill bidding
  13. It's the well known practice of putting famous but non-related names in Ebay auction titles. All the kids who are searching for new Organissimo CDs and merchandise on Ebay will stumble over this CD. BTW, I've also noticed that putting "Organissimo forum member" on my business card opens many doors.
  14. In that case, your best option would be the first japanese CD reissues (35DP series), but they are hard to find and can be very expensive. http://servercc.oakton.edu/~larry/miles/ma...ssonyjapan.html
  15. The remastered individual albums were released shortly after the relevant box sets. I don't know about two different remasters (20bit and 24bit), but the reissues are a huge upgrade over the intitial CD versions, which are among the worst jazz CD reissues ever. Some find Mark Wilder's remastering a bit cold sounding, but we're talkung about nuances and preferences here, whereas the first CD reissues were a disgrace.
  16. I've never seen a £ sign making problem. It's usually the € sign that displays wrongly on some message boards, when I type it with the Opera browser. No problem here, but on sa-cd.net, when I type € on my keyboard, it will display as something like "&3489" after my message is posted.
  17. Solaris is a UNIX-based OS that was popular in the scientific community. For home use, you'll fare better with a Linux distribution (like Ubuntu) because it is easier to set up. As far as office software goes, Open Office is now the most popular free software. http://www.openoffice.org Windows software can be run in an emulation environment under Linux, but that's mainly a solution where no suitable Linux software exists.
  18. Is that because there are so many Bluray discs being sold, or because DVD sales will go down as they are being replaced with movie downloads (as with CD --> MP3)? In the latter case, the Blu-ray hardware base will remain small. I doubt very much that Blu-ray will overtake DVD + download sales, given that Blu-ray is "only" a DVD with better image quality, and that most people are satisfied with DVD image quality. Unless the industry makes a huge price effort to push Blu-ray, it will be very difficult to convince the mass market to upgrade. It will be easier than with SACD/DVD-A vs CD, because most people are able to notice the quality difference, but I rather predict that Blu-ray will remain an up-market niche for many years.
  19. No, Paul's question is about the list of Forums on the main page only:
  20. This will change the display order of topics within a subforum, but not the order of subfora on the main page.
  21. Weird. I always thought the rather "illogical" order of subforums was due to the fact that it was automatically sorted alphabetically, but apparently it is sorted manually.
  22. I don't think audio-only Blu-ray titles will find a market. There is already a hi-rez surround audio format - the SACD - which has the huge advantageof being backward-compatible (CD layer on hybrid SACDs). Blu-ray audio discs have nothing new to offer. The debate about what sounds better - DSD or hi-rez PCM - is mainly academic and of no relevance for 99% of the users. There is also the precedent of DAD discs, DVD-Video discs with no video content but 24bit/96kHz PCM sound (stereo-only), which were released already in 1998 but were limited to a few audiophile labels. Ironically, Nine Inch Nails has announced music-only Blu-ray discs with 24/96 PCM stereo sound, although that audio format would also fit on DVD. So as far as music goes, I think there will only be Blu-ray video discs, just like with DVDs, but with potentially better sound. Some people will advance the theory that video freaks who want HD picture will also start appreciating hi-rez sound and become audiophiles, but I don't believe in it. I visit a couple of movie fora where people spend thousands of $ on projectors and video players, but rarely discuss sound quality. Just like with music DVDs, I think there will be many Blu-ray music discs with sub-par (CD quality) sound, because very few people (including the producers) care about the sound of video discs.
