EC proposes extending European copyright
Claude replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It's not a debated issue here, even among music fans. Most people don't know how long copyright lasts and that some music is in the public domain and some not. The issue is only being discussed by lobbyists and some IP activists. The latter oppose it mainly because of questions of principle and not because of the economic impact on the music buyer, which is minimal. I find the accompanying measures, which the Commission included to make a more "balanced" package, quite interesting, although I don't know how they will work in practice. From the explanatory notes of the proposal (bold emphasis is mine) http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUri...0464:FIN:EN:PDF -
EC proposes extending European copyright
Claude replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The copyirght extension will not be retroactive, according to the current proposal. It will only apply to those recordings which are still protected at the date on which the directive will have to be implemented by the Member States, i.e. some time in 2010 or 2011. So everything recorded before 1960 or 61 will remain in the public domain. http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/copyri...otection_en.htm -
Toshiba gets high resolution from current DVDs

What's up with japanese companies suggesting that their CD sound hi-rez (K2HD CDs) and DVDs look like HD? Do they have more lax laws against false advertising there? http://www.stereomojo.com/K2%20HD/K2HDReview.htm -
The Nat Adderley was on SACD - now which disc has better sound? The Hawk is available on a great sounding Mobile Fidelity SACD. The Nat Adderley SACD sounds rather awful. I recently got the japanese K2 remaster, which is slightly better. But either the recording wasn't very good or all the reissues used damaged master tapes, because none of them sounds fully satisfactory, like most other Riverside sessions from that time.

"Husbands and wives" is one of my Top 5 Woody Allen movies, also because of Sydney Pollack's performance. Among Pollack's directorial efforts I like "Three Days of the Condor" best.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

John Patton - Mosaic Select CD3 Ding Dong ! -
I agree. The japan-only K2 remasters of OJC material also mostly sound very good, though some sound more manipulated (boosted bass) than the US K2 remasters. Many of them can be bought for around $10 from asian sellers on Ebay.

Has anyone listened to this to the end? I don't have this CD, as I have the "Major works ..." 2CD box set. At the time (in the 90s), 80min CDs also had an increased risk of disc manufacturing defects. I don't know if it's still the case today. The Ascension CD is 79:26, was released in 2000. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascension_(album)

I re-boot Windows (2000) only once a week, and use the Hibernate function the rest of the time. It takes about 30 seconds for the desktop to be fully loaded from the moment I switch on the computer. The time depends on the amount of RAM (I have 1GB) and the speed of the hard drive, as the Hibernate function saves and then reloads the content of the RAM from the hard drive. This also means that when the computer reloads, all open applications will be in the same state as I left them when switching off the PC.

Will that be considered an admission of guilt or will the spontaneous apology reduce her sentence? -
RECEIVER RECOMMENDATIONS ? Preferably one with a mono switch and at a
Claude replied to Harold_Z's topic in Audio Talk
In the 80's and 90's many (if not most) receivers had a mono switch, because every FM tuner needs that feature. The ineresting thing with the receivers was that the mono switch was usually in the amplifier stage and would apply to any signal passing through the amp. So you could use it for CDs and LPs as well. -
Great album! I ordered the CD earlier today

Jackie McLean fan? Too good to be true bargain?
Claude replied to mikelz777's topic in Recommendations
Maybe it's only temporary, because of unexpectedly high demand. It would not make sense to let go OOP a topselling title for which no licensing is due. Edit: according to the Fresh Sounds website it is currently available (€ 34.95 (USD 41.56)) -
Interesting blog entry, as usual I like the album, but I don't consider it that essential. Does anyone know a decent sounding reissue of this album? The one's I have heard (I don't remember which ones, maybe even an XRCD) sound as if the tape was badly damaged or a poor copy was used. Muddy and bloated, like all CD reissues of "Incredible Jazz guitar of Wes Montgomery".

Neil Young's Incredibly Massive New Release
Claude replied to Hot Ptah's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I don't think these will come out on Blu-ray only. That would be a guaranteed flop, just like releasing a recording on single layer SACD only. Even an LP-only release would be commercial suicide (the recent info about the new Elvis Costello album being released on LP+download only was wrong, there will be a CD). How many Neil Young fans (only fans will buy a 10 disc set) own Blu-ray players? Neil Young made the announcement at a Java conference (the technology used by Blu-ray discs), which could explain why he was talking only about a blu-ray release. Given that he hates CD so much, a DVD release (with 24bit/96kHz sound) seems logical. He already released some reissues on CD+DVD sets, the DVD containing the same music at a higher resolution and just a little video material. -
Here's their blurb: http://www.cimprecords.com/about/ (my emphasis) The few CIMP CDs I have (Khan Jamal - Balafon Dance, The Mystery of Prince Lasha, maybe some others) sound very realistic, but not necessarily as transparent and easy on the ear as some multitrack recordings which have more possibilities to tweak the sound of every instrument after the recording was taped. I can imagine that the high dynamics of the recordings can cause problems for radio play, but isn't that why radio stations use compression and other things?

Anchor Sue Simmons drops the F-bomb
Claude replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I find the whole affair quite disturbing. Does it mean it's OK for a US news anchor to yell at co-workers during the programme, as long as the work "fuck" is avoided? She only appologised for the use word, but not for her choleric outburst as such. -
I'm a big Tom Waits fan, and I found her cover of "Falling Down" dull and unremarkable. I'm looking forward to the new Woody Allen comedy, with Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz, presented today at the Cannes Film Festival.

OJC Pressings and their place on the market
Claude replied to six string's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
It would be interesting to know if these LPs were really made from the CD masters. Steve Hoffman wrote on his forum that all the OJC LPs were made from the analog masters, but I'm not so sure. He tends to be sloppy with such general statements. As far as the "analog" OJC LPs go (pre OJC-275), the sound is good but not audiophile. I would not spend more than $10 for them. The german Mikulski (later ZYX) LP pressings generally sound poor. The pressing quality is good, but the mastering leaves a lot to be desired, as with their remastrred CDs (the OJC20 series)
