Concord Shutting Fantasy Down and Burying its Tapes?
Claude replied to RDK's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yes, it's archived on the Emusic.com server, as MP3 files In order to archive the music properly, they would have to make high resolution transfers (96/24 PCM or higher), and this takes some time. The CD masters from the late 80's, early 90's are too limited. How do you know they haven't made high-res transfers? I'm not saying they haven't made transfers at all. I don't don't believe they could have made transfers of the complete Fantasy vault. This would need several qualified engineers to work full-time for a couple of years. -
Concord Shutting Fantasy Down and Burying its Tapes?
Claude replied to RDK's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I don't think a tape archivist has to prepare his archive in a way that non-expert staff can easily handle it. Stuart Kremsky was informed at short notice that the archive was going to be transferred by Iron Mountain, and was even locked out from the archive. I don't want to quote Steve Hoffman again and again, but read what he wrote in the SH forum thread: -

Steve Hoffman: So, it all depends on how well the Fantasy staff marks and catalogues their tapes before transferring them to Iron Mountain. When they fire their archivist and let Iron Mountain do that work, what would you expect to happen? -

The CD masters from the late 80's, early 90's are too limited. I rather think that Concord simply transferred the tape archive to Iron Mountain. The tapes will remain accessible, but Iron Mountain being a general archival company, the likelyhood of tapes being misidentified and misfiled (read Steve Hoffman's comments) and therefore becoming practically inaccessible is rather high. -
Don't forget that Nadal reached the Wimbledon final last year. Not bad for a "clay court specialist".

Looking for Braxton's Santa Cruz 2003
Claude replied to blind-blake's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I can't access mp3stor.com right now, but I think it's a russian site like allofmp3.com, for the moment still legit inside Russia, but illegal in other countries. Based on broadcasting licences, they pay very low royalties to the local composers society, but nothing to the artist or labels. -
Looking for Braxton's Santa Cruz 2003
Claude replied to blind-blake's topic in Offering and Looking For...
If it's about the 1993 recording, maybe Hat will reissue it at some time http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:k9frxqrjldte I didn't know this was so rare. It's one of my favourite Braxton CDs. -
Could it be that the Impulse! CDs have moved to the midprice range (like in Europe) and that this is the reason for mentioning them in the newsletter?

My last comparision: The Connoisseur release of "Pax" sounds very simlar to the Mosaic set. I like it a bit better, because it sounds a bit more dynamic and brighter than the box. "Eris", "Pax" and "Calliope", which were taken from second generation tapes, sound inferior on both discs.
-
BTW, it's worth noting that the Andrew Hill Mosaic set wasn't remastered by McMaster (as most of the Blue Note Mosaics), but by Odea Murphy and Malcolm Addey.
-
Now listening to "Black fire". The RVG has almost unbearably boosted treble, and slightly boosted bass. The Mosaic sounds much more natural. On both RVGs, I can't hear any benefit from the new transfer. The only differences are the debatable EQ choices.
-
As I write this, I'm listening to "Point of departure", which was an early RVG release (1999) with more extreme remastering choices. Compared to the Mosaic, it sounds very bright and thin. The bass notes are hard to follow, and the instruments are lacking body. This one should be avoided. As with most post-1963 Blue Note sessions, the sound is quite veiled. Maybe RVG tried to compensate this with the boosted treble on his remaster. From my memory, the other RVGs are generally better balanced, but not necessarily an improvement over the Mosaic.

What a spectacularly innovative function! I hope Mosaic has patented this, like Amazon did with their 1-click-ordering button

Concord Shutting Fantasy Down and Burying its Tapes?
Claude replied to RDK's topic in Miscellaneous Music
That's what many other labels are doing. It should not be forgotten that these tapes are degrading progressively and will become unusable. However, with the huge Fantasy catalog and the limited staff, it will take a couple of years to transfer everything, if it is done decently. -

Duke Ellington: The Reprise Studio Recordings
Claude replied to B. Goren.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Ellington longbox is neither from Mosaic nor from Universal, it's from Warner. That explains it's unique format. The Universal sets released in Europe use the same packaging as the Mosaic boxes, except for the different reference number and the missing limited edition number. -
Candidate Cities to host 2012 Olympic Games
Claude replied to EKE BBB's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I like the slight deconstructivist touch, but it's a poor logo for such a popular event. Without the London inscription and the olympic rings, it would make a nice motive for an "arty" t-shirt. -
Amazing clip of Buffaloes, lions, and a Croc...
Claude replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That's an amazing moment they caught on video. The only thing missing was Crocodile Dundee jumping out of the bushes to save the little buffalo. Here's how you can save Youtube videos: http://www.kissyoutube.com -
If the CD is not even representative of the music that has been played at Yoshi's in the past 10 years (only 6 artists, most of them from the Concord catalogue), why bother if it is representative of the various communities within the jazz scene? The most embarrassing thing about this is that they wanted to sell a Concord promo sampler as a Yoshi anniversary celebration CD.

This evening I watched a DVD with a Chet concert from April 1988 in Germany. At that point, his playing was technically limited and very sparse, but every note was right on spot, and the atmosphere was very intense. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chet-Baker-Torino-.../dp/B000GNOLWO/ -
