  1. I'm not the biggest Bob fan (by a long shot), but this is some of his most inspired stuff I've heard in a long time.
  2. Tonight: Thumbscrew (Halvorson, Formanek, Fujiwara) Sunday: Mary Halvorson's Code Girl I've enjoyed seeing both groups in the past year and a half. So catching them again at SFJAZZ in the tiny Joe Henderson Lab is a no-brainer.
  3. Excellent! I really wanted to see them, but I'll be out of town next week when they're playing in Oakland.
  4. Basically the New York Jazz Quartet, minus Frank Wess. Haven't heard this but "Blues for Sarka" and "Surge" were great albums.
  5. Burnt Sugar performing Max's "We Insist: Freedom Now Suite"
  6. Is there any question about that? I haven't heard. I liked the movie a lot. You just have to adjust your mindset from Bogart and the other classic Marlowe interpretations. Sterling Hayden was great, too!
  7. I must say I haven't been following this stuff since I don't play LPs anymore, but a friend of mine is an 'addict' and invited me into the "Music Matters Jazz - Blue Note Reissues Lovers" Facebook group. It's astounding to read what's going on. First of all, the prices of these albums are mostly $30 and up ... WAY up! I had no idea. Secondly, it seems like a lot of the members are buying them not for the music, but to say they have them in their collection. Reminds me a LOT of the heyday of Mosaic-mania.
  8. I have Amazon Prime Music which is the same thing. Agreed about the advantage of listening to "virtually anything" before deciding to buy.
  9. Somehow I missed his album. Will have to get it.
  10. Yeah - and it's more of a rock album than the first one, too. I wasn't expecting that. Never saw them, unfortunately.
  11. The lesser-known of their albums, but VERY good! This is a much better album than I expected. Especially if you like Alex Ligertwood's voice.
  12. I really enjoyed this. It's about jazz, but also about a very eccentric and wealthy family. Written by Nica's niece, so the insights are very personal.
  13. Looking forward to Big Ears myself!
  14. SFJAZZ 2019-20 Season Tickets on sale to Members today. General public: July 12. I bought a boatload of tickets today. This surprised me because when I first looked through the catalog I was a bit UNDER-whelmed.
  15. A lot of good stuff for sure, but THIS is the one that would get me there (if I lived on the East Coast): Gary Bartz ANOTHER EARTH 50-Year Anniversary featuring Ravi Coltrane & Special Guest Charles Tolliver
  16. Yes, we're VERY lucky to have this station in the Bay Area. Long live KCSM!
  17. Interesting piece. I finally saw JD at the NYC Winter Jazzfest this year battling with David Murray. Quite a show!
  18. Saw them recently for the first time. Excellent show!
  19. I will always love YLT, but I DO like their early stuff better.
  20. So between this question and the mention of being "pitch corrected," it would be nice to get a definitive answer about this release.
  21. Curtis Amy Select, Disk 3 (live + Katanga) - great stuff!
  22. It's great! Really captures their late-period live show.
