What live music are you going to see tonight?
BFrank replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Looking forward to next Sunday in SF: "Being & Becoming" with Peter Evans/Nick Jozwiak/Tyshawn Sorey + Heavy Arts Ensemble -
Saw that on FB, and several of his recent posts about dealing with his cancer. I only knew him through social media, but never in person. Always seemed like a great guy and obviously a great musician. RIP, the great Paul "FREE" McKee!

I still have an OG German ECM. It's a shame he didn't keep that group together longer. They were unique.

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

A British group that never broke through, but they had a lot of energy and some pretty decent songs. This is probably their best. -
Cannonball was really cooking in the 60s-70s. I don't understand why there haven't been any meaningful retrospective box sets or compilations of his work from this period.

Great album! Now playing:

This is a nice compilation -
THAT'S impressive! Especially the 285 days in a row!

Yes! It's excellent. Haven't seen that cover before - and it's already had more than one different cover.

That's a great album! Is that a NEW remaster? Now Playing

Also been dealing with back problems for years. Had surgery for a herniated disk in 2000. I have things relatively under control now. Tylenol helps, and Gabapentin for some related neurological symptoms. My father always complained about having a "bad back", but I never knew exactly what he meant by that.

Lucrecia Dalt "A Danger To Ourselves" -Saw her at Big Ears. Very low key. Not sure why she chose that album cover. -
Definitely an "older" crowd here. Not surprising since this form of social media is pretty much dead, but glad we're still hanging on here. I'm 73, retired and in relatively good health (knock on wood). There's always aches and pains and I don't have the vision and hearing I once had - now wear glasses most of the time and have been wearing hearing aids for 3 years (most certainly the result of hundreds of rock concerts over the decades). I still go to see a lot of live music - both jazz and rock (mostly out-of-the-mainstream stuff, which means I go alone). And have been attending the Big Ears festival since 2018 (where I met Nessa👍), which requires a lot of stamina, but me and my same-age friends are still able to handle the long days/nights and constant hustle up and down the streets of Knoxville. My wife and I are the same age and most of my friends are in the same general age group. We like to travel when possible, but it's getting more and more expensive. I must say, turning 70 was kind of an eye-opener, and I still think about it a lot. I don't "feel" 70 (whatever that means) but the existential thought being in my last 1/3 of life is heavy, for sure. I still haven't completely come to grips with it. Nice to hear everyone else's experiences.

See something different? Or have it on disk, but only watch it when played on TV? Either way ... Funny!

One of my favorite films, and it was on TCM a couple nights ago. I have the Criterion Blu-ray release, but watched it again anyway, and I always see something different. Also, it never occurred to me that the entire film takes place in a 24-hour period. This was mentioned by the TCM Host.

I liked her early records on JMT. They were very forward-thinking at the time.

Last Tuesday, the night before I left for Knoxville, I saw Johnny Marr at the Great American Music Hall club in SF. I've seen him a number of times and he never disappoints. This one was no exception. -
I was there. Very interesting presentation. The fact that Roscoe basically played solo for an entire hour (mostly on Bass Sax!) was astounding - especially at his age. And it seemed like Tyshawn was very unsure about how to contribute. He played very little. I saw 22 performances. Highlights were: William Hooker Quartet Masada I w/Zorn, Dave Douglas, Greg Cohen, Joey Baron Roscoe & Tyshawn Marc Ribot/Mary Halvorson "Secret Show", Friday night at the Postmodern Sound Exchange Halvorson: Canis Major Electrical Field of Love: Harriett Tubman + Georgia Anne Muldrow Patricia Brennan Septet (Adam O'Farrill, Marcus Gilmore, Mauricio Herrera, Jon Irabagon, Mark Shim, Kim Cass) - lots of energy and the crowd that night was electric! Gary Lucas & Gods and Monsters: w/Calvin Weston and Ernie Brooks Dave Douglas GIFTS Quintet: w/Tomeka Reid, James Brandon Lewis, Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang
