Coincidentally, I was listening to an LP of Waldron' solo album, "UPDATE," a couple of nights ago, and it occurred to me that one way to describe his playing is "tough love."

Sounds like a nice event but....$40 for "early" admission? Not so nice

Just ordered the Barshai. $38 from an Amazon Z-shop, new. The Mahler box might be next

Thanks. A good read. I love Evan Parker

Are there any box bargains currently available?
Leeway replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
They are. This is the 2nd one I bought. The first was for my daughter. It made untold numbers of cookies, brownies and other baked goods. Now that my daughter has her own place, the wife needed her own KitchenAid. Their utility is undoubted, but their musicality is sadly lacking -

Yes of course! Not only because she is my darling wife , but because she turns a patient eye upon the rather steady stream of other packages from Amazon and EBAY bearing vinyl and CD -
"it's a shame I spent my youth tracking down BYG, ESP, FMP splatter (little of which interests me now) when the REAL heat was right here. I'll grant it's possible to dig Bunk and Bill Dixon but I'll take the BJ 99 times out of 90." "Unfortunates raised in era (error) of rock hegemony are pushed toward "free" crap first ("that 'fire music' is 'spiritual,' man"), little of which stands as either sound or composition (AACM sentimental gentlemen most notable/sustained exception). YOU go listen Alan Silva or Peter Brotzmann (or Jason Moran or Joe Lovano), i'd rather slop the stable barefoot. " This unfortunate will be glad to take those hated BYGs, ESPs and FMPs off your hands now that you found the true light (or heat). No use having them cluttering up the back of the barn.

Just received a notice from Amazon that this shipped. Moral: When you see a great deal like this, grab it. Delivered today; it's now $71.98 on Amazon. I don't know if this has always been true, but there have been some big price fluctuations on Amazon, not just at usual sale times (like Christmas) but day to day and week to week. It's surprising--at east to me. Another example: my wife wanted a KitchenAid mixer and sent me a link (a gentle hint ). While I mulled over this state of affairs I checked back on Amazon a few days later; price had dropped more than $20. It seems to pay to check the pricing over a few days time. Amazon seems to be pursuing the pricing game that airlines now use, where seat prices will fluctuate up or down depending on a host of factors on an almost continuous basis. I'm sure they are using some sort of algorithm to set pricing. No more "set it and forget it." -
The Bach Cantatas box is now $41.99! I've been listening to this one a lot; a great way to pick up a nice chunk of Bach's vocal works. Hard to resist. As has often been noted, hanging out on this Board can get expensive

For Bach, Glenn Gould. Amazing stuff.

The LP and CD covers were designed by his last record company, the now defunct Philips label, not by Brendel himself They must have loved his horn-rimmed Euro look I suppose Brendel himself was not an unwilling participant. In a way, it is very smart marketing. Seeing him on every cover provided instant identification, and in a way, a sense of knowing the artist. He always has this look, at once intellectual and a bit spacey. It wouldn't matter much --and indeed woul dbe quite a joke--if he couldn't play; the fact is, he had a wonderful approach to the music (and not just to the keyboard, as many virtuosos seem to have).
-
Another vote for Brendel. I dig his combination of intellect, technique and commitment to the music. I'm not sure I dig his face on virtually every LP he put out. Not sure if that was pure egotism or a tongue-in-cheek campiness at work.

Joëlle Léandre / Phillip Greenlief - That Overt Desire of Object
Leeway replied to Kreilly's topic in New Releases
I have this one already, and it is a good one. Greenlief is someone deserving of wider recognition. -
Listening right now to: Alice Coltrane TRANSFIGURATION. Earlier, Dewey Redman, EAR OF THE BEHEARER.

It's enjoyable enough but not to the tune of 7 CDs of it (at least for me). Plus, I always thought that Mosaic was about bringing under-appreciated or difficult to locate music to the attention of the public. This hardly describes the MJQ. Plus there have been already a fair number of MJQ box sets and repackagings, so the Mosaic is hardly critical. As for the vinyl, as I think I indicated, I'm glad to see it coming back, but I hope $25 per LP is not going to be the going rate. It's a bit steep. BTW, have you checked out the Austin record show? I'm told it's one of the largest in the world. Hope to check it out myself one of these days.

The MJQ release leaves me underwhelmed; however, the Getz release gets my attention, not for Getz himself (plenty of Getz about, one would think), but because Mosaic apparently is going back to vinyl--at least on some releases. Mosaic abandoned the vinyl market just as the vinyl revival (some of us never left) heated up. Apparently, they've caught on and the vinyl Getz is one result. The only fly in the ointment is the $25 per LP price tag. I seem to recall they used to run about $15 per LP.

I have a lot of Katchen on LP. I love the way he plays the German piano repertoire; that is his forte.
-
These are the ones that have my attention at the moment. The Messiaen box is 6 discs for $36, not bad. The Bach Cantatas box is a whopping 22 discs for only about $52.00. The Ligeti box is 5 discs for about $30.
-
Cool! It's not often mentioned--or appreciated.
