Summer Vacation/Holiday Plans
Neal Pomea replied to catesta's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It's not really jazz-oriented, but this year the Festival of American Folklife on the National Mall will have some great music from Texas: Western Swing, country songwriters, Tex-Mex, blues, Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco. Check it out! Free. -
Summer Vacation/Holiday Plans

Gas prices will never come down, but maybe my salary will go up in the future to offset the expense! Planning to drive to Nova Scotia in August, first to the Acadian area along the Bay of Fundy to celebrate my Cajun ancestry, then to Cape Breton and Cheticamp to see puffins and whales and gorgeous scenery. I've never been through New England so the drive should be great! -
FWIW, Fahey claimed his best guitar playing was on Fare Forward Voyagers. See these notes at the Fahey Files: http://www.johnfahey.com/pages/ffv2.html

They're Internet only albums. 1 and 2 are all taken from his previous releases. 3 has some outtakes and alternate titles for songs from his album Railroad. If you don't have any Fahey, all 3 would be good and represent a variety of styles. 1. Songs from Live from Tasmania; Vol. 2 Death Chants, Breakdowns, and Military Waltzes; and Old Fashioned Love. Boodle Am Shake and Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning are with an old New Orleans-style jazz band. 2. Songs from Vol. 1 Blind Joe Death, Vol. 3 Dance of Death and Other Plantation Favorites, and Old Fashioned Love. His stuff can be hard to find. ETA: I got this information from a member of the "International Fahey Committee" on the Yahoo Group John Fahey Guitar

Sorry this happened! Take them out of their jackets for sure and dry them all off. Once they are dry you can clean the records with distilled water only and a soft cloth. Tap water has too many chemicals.

At work we've started using instant messaging as a way of getting quicker responses than with e-mail. I just look at it as cutting in line ahead of e-mails that were sent earlier, expecting more immediate treatment! Can't do anything about it though because my boss is a big fan of instant messaging.

I wouldn't let this discussion reach Congress or constitutional lawyers if I were you. They think the only thing that gives incentive to create music is a long long term of copyright, extending beyond the grave!

I think someone is referring to Jethro Bodine the character on the show and another is referring to Jethro Burns the mandolin player who indeed could play jazz beyond his playing with the comedy act Homer and Jethro. I have an album called S'Wonderful with Jethro Burns on mandolin and Joe Venuti on violin, Eldon Shamblin of Bob Wills' Texas Playboys on electric lead guitar and a steel guitarist whose name I can't remember. -

And I'll be curious to hear a reasonable justification for the term of copyright in the United States. -

ah! 50 hours of country radio
Neal Pomea replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
You can get a good idea of the early days of Zydeco from the program playing Saturday from 7-10. Doesn't have anything to do with country music, but the music being played is very good! I am hearing vintage Clifton Chenier right now. -

Neal Pomea replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
This link does a good job explaining it: http://www.lsue.edu/acadgate/music/history.htm It would have been more appropriate to include Cajun music, which is like the country music of the French speaking Cajuns, than Zydeco, which began as a mix of Creole and blues, rhythm and blues and rock and roll but now is mixed with hip hop and soul. Including Zydeco in the program is about like including electric blues music like Muddy Waters and Bobby Blue Bland. This Web site that I authored represents Cajun music from the 20s to the 60s basically: http://npmusic.org (Didn't mean to shanghai the thread! The radio program looks interesting!)
