No disrespect to you Bruce, but again, you have to put the child first. Saving them from any further turmoil or ugliness is well worth the money or other satisfactions. When you have been through one of these scenes, you quiclky realize this; at least I hope you do. And that takes balls.

Joe Locke is a old and dear friend. In this millenium, he's the Master. Here's his website: Joe Locke

There ya go Jim! You have to stand up and lift your burdens on your shoulders; like a Man. And ultimately, put the children first; it's never their fault.

Just checked my LP and it looks early Liberty with 'Van Gelder' and no ear, mono copy. 1966 inner sleeve so seems to line up with the above. In fact "real" BN copies of this title - meaning being manufactured at the Plastylite pressing plant - do not (seem to) exist; the first copies date from the "Liberty-era". What might be confusing though, is that these first pressings still have Blue Note USA - and not Liberty - labels (but no ear). This is not unique for this title, as Blue Note kept using older labels - sometimes even w/Lexington address - during the Liberty era. Anyway, Liberty or not, the vinyl edition of Dippin' does sound great! This thread inspired me to transfer mine to cdr. Mine is a Blue Note - Stereo - 43 West 61st Street. "The Break Through" is great as well is the ballad "I See Your Face Before Me"

I used to have the Live at the Hollywood Bowl Lp. Not anymore. See this link: Doug Payne - CTI Sessions

That's how I remember his of his sound also. The band I saw, on several nights at the Vanguard, included Jimmy Lyons, David S. Ware and Marc Edwards.
-
You know Jim, I saw the band many times but the only vocalist I can remember is Ricks and once, Dennis Rowland.
-
Inspired by a recent thread; mine is in stereo:

This would be the usual reason why, Peter; to have newly recorded versions where the publishing is not shared under a old deal. Sometimes with a slightly new arangement.

The Christian McBride Band is one that I have seen often. A great live band that has a lot to offer in muscial variety.

Your description of The Ravens, is what I really meant; a transitional R&R/ Pop group. As far as stories go,,,, Well, Basie, let's say, liked to have a good time. A real good time. Curtis Fuller had a bad toothache and he was helped by a hip, local dentist who was rather loose with his pharmaceuticals! Jimmy Ricks ( He didn't have a eyepatch when I saw him)

I have seen his name associated with early Rock 'n Roll groups also, and assumed it was the same guy. That week I went often. At the time, Jon Hendricks brother Jimmy, lived in Rochester where they had other family, and I was close to Jimmy. At one time Jimmy was the road manager for both Basie and Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, so when Basie came to town, Jimmy was in his glory. Everybody knew Jimmy Hendricks. So I was hanging out a lot with Jimmy and band members, before, during and after the shows. I could tell you stories......

Yeah Jim, I saw him with Basie, where they played for a week at a upscale club called "The Top of the Plaza" in Rochester, that had a jazz policy and all of the big bands played there. I remember that he was a big, handsome guy with conked hair; sang in a bluesy style. Not the smoothist vocalist, as I remember; a shouter. I remember his baby tuxedo with silver studs, going down the arms and legs, complete with the ruffled shirt and blue bowtie. It must have been in 73 or 74. That band also had Jimmy Forest and Curtis Fuller in it, beside the regulars. The local public TV station might have recorded it. There was a series that they recorded and were broadcast with Thad & Mel, Buddy Rich ( this one is on DVD ) and others. This was the type of club that you could sit at a table and be just a few feet from the band; no elevated stage. That's the way to see and hear a big band!

I whis I had some of Paul Hoeffler's work as he made many of those famous shots in my hometown, Rochester, NY. This one is of Pee Wee Ellis and Ron Carter: -
Elvin Jones "Three Card Molly" (Monte)
marcello replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Discography
I have always thought that it was a typo of "Three Card Monte"; you know, the street card game. I have a tape that I made at the Vanguard with a over the top version with Andrew White and Ari Brown on tenors. -
God, that was nice! Thanks
-
Freddie Hubbard sparkles & Bu is so very hip on this one. Hank is in his prime.
-
Nice to see this, but as you might well know, the music is dubbed from other recordings.

I have this original print by Roy DeCarava of Trane & Elvin. I also have a Billie Holliday print from DeCarava ( along with a hand written letter from the Artist), that is truly extrodinary; dark, close-up, almost painfull singing face. -

I have MAKATULA also; don't care for it and it's a bad pressing, to boot!

My advise is never to make a major decision based on a women's influence. The're worse than drugs and quite a monkey to get off your back. A Gorilla ( or Magilla), as Bu would say. That being said, the music scene is nice in Seattle ( where I have some industry friends and connections ) with a committed group of artists and fans.
