  1. Irene Higginbotham wrote "Good Morning Heartache". She was J.C.'s niece Irene Kitchings wrote "Some Other Spring". She was married to Teddy Wilson.
  2. Happy Birthday Mike and many more. Tom
  3. One thing I know: Bennie Krueger was a early saxophone virtuoso and led a orchestera in the 20's.
  4. by Eugene Chadbourne While her closest connection in the popular music of the '30s and '40s was the great jazz singer Billie Holiday, prolific songwriter Irene Higginbotham was also related by blood and marriage to several famous musicians from this genre. The songwriter was the niece of classic jazz trombonist J.C. Higginbotham. She was also the ex-wife of Teddy Wilson
  5. Thanks Marcello, Did you know if this short movie is available on VHS or DVD? No, but I got the information here:Jazz In Film
  6. This thread reminds me of the time I stumbled into a dusty, old, run down record store in Miami ( Lee's' One Stop), in 1980 and came up with these Mobley Blue Notes: Soul Station Dippin' Workout Roll Call All 43 West 61st Street pressings. Oh, and a still sealed copy of Tina Brooks - True Blue
  7. LIONEL HAMPTON AND HERB JEFFRIES. Copyright Collection Universal Pictures Co., 1955. Director/Producer: Will Cowan; Editor: George McGuire. 15 mins., black & white, 35mm. FEA 773-74 A music short featuring the title acts with Vicky Lee singing "Baby, Don't Love Me" and the Four Hamptons dancing. Loray White sings "Black Coffee" as well.
  8. Don't worry, I had mine out with the same procedure and no problems from the sugery or eating. Now if the Gall Bladder is diseased, to the extent that they can't do it arthroscopically, the procedure is done the old way; that is they take it out whole, making a large wound and cutting through muscle and other tissue. Good Luck! And yea, make sure your surgeon is a board ceritfied ace.
  9. Great Book! I loved the early history.
  10. This Pablo ( I have it in red vinyl ) has a great "Wind Machine" on it! By the way, here is a great Basie website:Count Basie
  11. I believe this is only available as a import: The wonderful "Pensive Miss", with Snooky Young on trumpet, is not to be missed.
  12. I would assume that the knock-out came when Crouch was a drummer during the NYC loft days. I also think that it is apparent that his worth as a influence in the jazz world has waned quite a bit. The music can't afford such a hateful parasite.
  13. Seeing him live, up close, is a expierence. It's for me, the best way to listen to his music for the greater part. One week at the Vanguard, I went several times, sat up front or close enough, to let that sound hit me like a Tsunami! It was that band that had Jimmy Lyons and Ralph Malik. I wonder how this concert went?
  14. [quote name='JSngry' And hey, no discussion of great Blakey performances, trumpet-centric or not, is complete w/o a serious consideration of the 5/13/61 Olympia gig released on RTE/Trema/etc. That's "HOLY SHIT!" material if ever there was any.
  15. There is nothing more memorable than Lee Morgan's solo on "Moanin'"! All of the fire on "Free For All" can be directly attibuted to Bu's intensity. I think they all got a shot if inspiration from him that day. It's really a live performance, in the studio, and Art was, let's say, rather loose that day. Wayne's solo is so hot!
  16. Recomended by myself and Uncle Skid: Ingrid Jensen

    Billy Taylor

I never liked Billy Taylor until I saw him at a couple Jazzmobile concerts. Maybe when he isn't constrained by commercial recordings or appearances, where he has to play for a paying public, he lets his hair down. Both times he was great. The first band included Jimmy Owens, Victor Gaskin, Frank Wess and Freddie Waits. The second band included Charles Sullivan and John Stubblefield.
  19. Me too Uncle Skid...listening to it now!
  20. Never heard of that one, nor have i heard of Frank Haynes. Tell us more. Picture of Heath ( Jimmy Heath) is a favorite of mine on Xanadu as well as the Sam Note (Act One) with Joe Romano, Barry Harris and Billy Higgins.
  21. You have to visit one of the Dali Museums at stand in front of those huge paintings to really expierence his genius. Even the most jaded will come away with at least respect for their power, heart and intelligence.
  22. She's not for me either.
  23. Try this link from Losin's site: HERE
  24. Nate, He says both: "Roach has never got a good drum sound. His tightly muffeled snare resembles a hatbox, and his tomtoms have no resonance." And: "Roach has what used to be called 'fast wrists'. and much of what he does is technically dazzling. But he dosn't swing. He leaves your feet flat on the ground, your head and hands still What a mystery!" pages 272-275 New York Notes
  25. I guess to know her is to love her. Yes.
