  1. Thanks, Jim
  2. I always thought the art work was/is strange. The front cover is as Chuck says with the photo in B&W, as shown above. "Package Design - Gauna - Douglas" Meaning Alan Douglas and the photographer, Frank Gauna.

    SOUL STATION

One of the great song titles ( and songs, for that matter) This I Dig Of You
  6. A town about 50 miles east of here, Oswego, New York has had 62" of snow in the past 24 hours. That's right, more than 5 feet of snow!
  7. Because of the price of real estate in NYC, any space at street level is valuable and cpuld be used for any kind of bar, restaurant or retail store. I'm not making excuses, because I come accross a lot of narrow minded music presenters in NYC, but the reality is if you want to hear adventurous music, and that may be any kind of jazz soon, you will have to find it in the places like Clem says and in the smaller, 2nd and 3rd storey rooms. I mean, I'm not a big fan of Iridium, but at that location in Times Square, they could put in almost anything and make more money. To their credit, they have been adding late night sets ( 3rd sets) with new and different talent lately. All accross the country there are clubs who off the split mentioned in the article. The real problem ( except in the largest cities) is that they won't give you a weekend, but want to do this on Wed. & Thurs. Forget the weekend, they can hire anybody to fill the place on the weekend. To have a career in this music you have to do it all: selective workshops & clinics, publishing, recording ( both as a leader and sideman), non USA tours and clubdates, festivals, on site cd sales and yes, NYC club/concert dates. Because to many, if you don't play NYC as a leader, you aren't one.
  8. You know, I should change my name here, but when I signed on I didn't realize what I was doing! There will ,be about 1200 - 1400 images in total, all from the 1975 - 1979 peroid. After that I thought that taking pictures was getting in the way of enjoying the music. Some of the photos are of: Anthony Braxton Phil Woods Gillespie Gene Burtoncini Michael More Kenny Burrell Jimmy Owens Frank Wess Mary Osbourn Vi Redd Woody Shaw Charles Bobo Shaw Dave Holland Joe LaBarbera Elvin Jimmy Heath Slide Hampton A very young Branford Marsalis Barry Kiener Stanley Cowell Sam Jones Rufus Reid Billy Hart and many, many more.
  9. Thanks for the information. Very nice for you to add those memories. For those curious, I have more posted here: Flickr Photos I'll have scores more uploaded in a couple of months.
  10. They sure look the same. He's someone I'm not familar with.
  11. Everyone has been identified in the Studio Rivbea photos in this thread. The photos with Parker are: Jemeel Moondoc, Arthur Williams and Rashid Bakr. That last photo with Sam Rivers is Joe Daley on tuba. I sent him a copy. These other two played with Hannibal Marvin Perterson's Sunrise Orchestra; July 1976.
  12. I still am looking for the names of these people:
  13. Jimmy Owens is one of those really great players and people who never put out a lot of great records. That Horizon date was not then or is now indicitive of what he can do.
  14. Amazing photos. Whoever invented the bungee cord, should be given the Nobel.
  15. I had this on LP, but not now. Lent it out and never got it back. It had a different cover too. A motherlode of great music from Zoot Sims -- mid 70s recordings done for the Groove Merchant label, presented here in a double-length package! Although Groove Merchant was mostly known for its funkier sounds, the work here is nicely back to basics for Sims -- small group sessions that give him plenty of room to open up and blow -- paired with players that include Lionel Hampton on vibes, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Teddy Wilson on piano, and Buddy Rich on drums. The sound is warm, but never sleepy -- and Zoot's tenor has a nice edge on his solos that dominate most tunes. CD features 14 tracks that include "Nirvana", "Somerset", "A Summer Thing", "Somebody Loves Me", "Up A Lazy River", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Send In the Clowns", "Air Mail Special", "Ham Hock Blues", and "Ring Dem Bells".
  16. 14. “Mornin’ Reverend” (Jones) Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Orchestra, Gregory Herbert (s) Live in Munich (Horizon, 1977) One of the great late ones, Gregory Herbert. I told Eddie Daniels a couple of months ago, that I'll aways love him for his solo of this song on THAD JONES-MEL LEWIS JAZZ ORCHESTRA, MONDAY NIGHTS (Solid State), but this one is great also. Herbert plays one of the great tenor solos on Greeting and Salutations.
  17. Good evidence of the above: Kenny Dorham Una Mas - title cut.
  18. I loved George Adams. His solo on "Duke Eliington Sounds of Love" is one of the best tenor solos ever!
  19. One of my Stitt photos from '76:
  20. Love those Gene Ammons records!
  21. I like Stylings of Silver with Home Cookin'
  22. If I remember correctly, Tenor Madness was not planned but of course, the Eternal Triangle sessions were.
