  1. If there is one really great OP record, this is it:
  2. I suggest this wonderful organization, if no other: Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection
  3. All the best, Mike. Have a great day and thanks for the music!
  4. You may dig Steve Greene
  5. Happy Birthday, buddy!
  6. Buddy Rich with Barry Kiener on piano and Tom Warrington on bass
  7. They had Black Panthers at a Wesleyan college? Edit: I take that back! Black Panthers at a Wesleyan College
  8. I found reading the book to be a chore that I didn't like. I like the fantasy in my music staight up; not embellished by second rate fiction.
  9. On December 21, 1970, Elvis Presley paid a visit to President Richard M. Nixon at the White House in Washington, D.C. The meeting was initiated by Presley, who wrote Nixon a six-page letter requesting a visit with the President and suggesting that he be made a "Federal Agent-at-Large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.
  10. I sent mine in last month via a credit card. Thanks for all of your hard work Jim!
  11. $9.94
  12. I have not listened to the record lately, so it may start with Daybreak, but it isn't listed on the album.
  13. I have a LP of Tell Me The Truth. Daybreak isn't on it but On The Trail is. It say "Lyrics by Jon Hendricks". It also has a fabolous version of Blues For Pablo, one of Hendricks' best recordings. A work of art. I knew Jon's brother Jimmy very well. I remember him telling me that Jon had lyrics for Blues For Pablo, but he wouldn't record it until both Pablo Casals and Pablo Picasso passed on. When they did, he did.
  14. To paraphrase Miles, I rather listen to Kenny Aronoff fuck up a backbeat, than hear Stewart Copeland play Roxanne with all of his electronic drum enhancements. He's got a lot of those gizmos on his kit so he can sound like a real drummer. I remember a article on Max Roach where he said they(?) invited him to one of their concerts in Austin. Max was gracious in his comments. Max is a real drummer.
  15. This is WAY too funny! I'll add this from Wikipedia[: He has a son named Kevin D. Bailey.
  16. I think it was taken at Dewey Redman's memorial service. John Rogers shot it. You can see more here:John Rogers Flickr Photos
  17. Frank Kimbrough is one of the great ones. Always interesting; always deep and soulful.
  18. Another excuse to post one of my photos: Dexter Gordon and Benny Bailey at the Village Vanguard.

This one has both Joe and Art sharing the front line, while they were both with Buddy Rich:
  21. Don't forget that thosae sessions were over 50 years ago! Dizzy Gillespie lived in Englewood Cliffs, at one time. It's well know that he objected to smoke because of his equipment.

Joe Romano & Richie Vitale Joe, until he recently married, would come back and forth to Rochester to visit or live. Sometimes those visits would be days, sometimes months. Between being on the road with Buddy, Bellson, Herman and the like, he worked/lived out of NYC, LA and Vegas, but always the road rat. I remember him being on the road with Sinatra and Donna Summer, (for God's sake) and The National Jazz Ensemble in the same year! One night during a bilzzard, I sat in a empty club and heard him go through a string of songs that flowed/changed from one to another: Mr. PC, Half Nelson etc, and ending with Sonnymoon for Two. This went on for the entire set, no stops, no ballads; very free. The band had Joe, Barry Kiener - piano, Steve Davis - bass ( the bass player on My Favorite Things and McCoy's brother in law), and the infamous to all jazz boards, Danny D'Imperio (DEEP) on drums. Played their heart out; one of the great set of music I've ever heard.

The festival there has been taken over by bassist John Clayton. I last saw Joe Romano about 18 month ago. He's fine and still playing up a storm at 74 years old. Act One is a really fine record.

I know Joe Romano very well, he and I are both from Rochester. Joe is now living in Port Townsend Washington. Joe is playing tenor on the left. Bad M/F Woody Herman w/ Joe Romano & Sal Nistico
