Guest Chaney Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 So they'll be mini-lp versions? What sayeth Tannomeister? No, according to Hiroshi Tanno the Japanese set will be released in a special box. Any idea if the Japanese released set is expected to have superior sound? When it comes to these matters, I always ask myself: What would Hans order? B) Quote

B) Well, I ordered both the 24-bit remastered U.K. version (for a friend) and the Japanese box, which will hopefully be DSD-remastered. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 I, too, am pretty pissed off at those Peter Gabriel SACDs they just put out. Unlike Parkertown, I bought the whole damn bunch of redbook remasters when they came out. They didn't even *hint* that they were working on the SACDs, the bastards! You know, as much as I'm looking forward to hearing this box set, I think I am going to hold off on buying it. Sony just released their first SACD hybrid this week and they are rolling out a bunch of others as the year moves on. I can wait 6 months or so to see if they put this out as an SACD hybrid. It's not like I don't have enough music to keep me busy. Later, Kevin Quote

If they did, I'd be surprised if they'd release this new box as hybrid SACDs... Sony Japan released the two original Blackhawk SACDs, not Sony US. Sony US seems to be more interested in hybrid SACDs than Japan. I don't want to pay Japanese SACD prices for non-hybrid SACDs with missing material... that's why I haven't bought them already! mgraham333 Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 I have to admit I'm not familiar with this set. I have the Complete Plugged Nickel box. How does the Blackhawk compare. Is it similar? Recommended? Quote
Guest Mnytime Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 (edited) If your a fan of Hank Mobley you should like this. For some reason this set isn't rated that high with several people because of Mobley. For my money I think it's some very good music and playing by everyone including Mobley. What I would really love to see Sony release is more from the tour with Sam Rivers in Japan! So are we certain that the Japanese version of this set is in DSD? Speaking of Hybrid SACD's. I thought the upcoming SACD of Trane's Blue Train was supposed to be a Hybrid? The CD Universe notes claim it is a regular SACD. I have a SACD player so I would be able to play it but I was hoping for a Hybrid so I could play it outside the house if needed. Edited May 10, 2003 by Mnytime Quote

Tjazz Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 (edited) Deepdiscountcd.com (no tax, no extra shipping charges) has it listed as: $19.48 In Person At The Blackhawk Vol. 1 [6/3] Miles Davis $19.48 In Person At The Blackhawk Vol. 2 [6/3] Edited May 18, 2003 by Tjazz Quote
Late Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 I imagine most people here (pre)ordering this set already are familiar with the music. I'd like to read more opinions/reviews on the playing. Here's my 2¢: I've always been fond of this set for Miles' soloing. In fact, I find his improvisations here a lot more interesting than on the Plugged Nickel set. His chops are right on (as they aren't for the Plugged Nickel date), and his playing, to me, reveals a lot of confidence. That said, I would have to cast my vote with the I-think-I-would-rather-have-a-different-second-horn-than-Mobley's group. Of course, I like Hank's playing, but my ears have never really been able to adjust to his approach in the context of a Miles Davis band. I don't think Hank lessens the musicality of the set at all, but, for some reason, I keep thinking of other horn players I'd like to hear instead. For some reason, Frank Strozier's name keeps popping up in my mind. He played with Miles close to this time, and I think (perhaps) he could have brought a little more fire to this gig. Just speculation, of course. History can't be changed, and I'm still very eager to pick up this set. Other feelings about the music? Quote
Out2Lunch Posted May 18, 2003 Report Posted May 18, 2003 I just got a reply to my query regarding the Mosaic vinyl version of this set. It will be available late June/early July and will consist of 6 LPs. Quote
mgraham333 Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 For those of you who are familiar with this set, does Miles play mostly muted or are there some open horn tracks in there? Quote
Guest Mnytime Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 Deepdiscountcd.com (no tax, no extra shipping charges) has it listed as: $19.48 In Person At The Blackhawk Vol. 1 [6/3] Miles Davis $19.48 In Person At The Blackhawk Vol. 2 [6/3] The cheapest way that I have seen this selling for in the U.S. is the 4CD set version for $31.49 at CDUniverse. If you buy both 2CD sets from there it sells for $17.49 for each set for a total of $34.98. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 20, 2003 Report Posted May 20, 2003 Well, I really enjoy Mobley's presence in this set. I don't hanker for another player. . . there are plenty of other recordings of other players with Miles; I'll enjoy these with Hank. Quite a bit of open horn playing by Miles. I preordered the set at cduniverse. In general preordering at cduniverse is incredibly hard to beat pricewise! Quote
