brownie Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 Vinnie Burke AllStars (FreshSound reissue of ABC-Paramount) The music does not match the track list... no idea if the problem was on the original release! Very nice music in any case! Quote

mjazzg Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 some very good playing by younger UK band - Mark Hanslip, Matthew Bourne, James Allsopp amongst them. Interesting compositions by Riaan Vosloo. Third of a trilogy and possibly the best Quote

jeffcrom Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 Frog Joseph - Old New Orleans Dixieland (Dulai). Hate the title; love the music on this 1960's album. The front line is Jack Willis, Frog Joseph, and Louis Cottrell, and the music really flows. Quote

Clunky Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 perhaps not the greatest recording but this one seems full of the Basie spirit Quote
jeffcrom Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 (edited) The Georgians, Vol. 2 (VJM). 1923 recordings by an interesting early jazz band. I'm particularly fascinated by the trumpeter, Frank Guarente, who was maybe the first significant jazz musician not born in the U.S. He was Italian, but moved to New Orleans as a young man. He and King Oliver became friends and exchanged trumpet lessons, and Oliver's band played Guarente's 21st birthday party in 1914. Edit: This band is not anywhere as hip as Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, but it's obvious on several tracks that part of the old man's tutelage of Guarente involved the use of the mute. jeffcrom Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 Dave Tarras/Abe Ellstein - Jewish Melodies (Period). Tarras's son-in-law Sam Musiker, who played clarinet and tenor in the Gene Krupa big band, plays tenor here, and I suspect he did the arrangements. And again. Quote

Leeway Posted October 16, 2011 Report Posted October 16, 2011 I think it made it into the album covers with punctuation thread, but if your talking "Stitt Becomes Pepper" thread, hell no, I'm not taking it there Quote
