vinyltim Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 The BNs are tight soul-jazz, quite airplay-ready, with Wilkerson as the only horn. That said, I like them, though they are quite different from the Riverside date (which I only have on CD). Seems like you scored a nice copy. Nice, I'm sure I'd like them--this is more harp bop. Grant Green is on the BN dates right? This is a nice copy--shows some wear but sounds great. Quote
sidewinder Posted August 11, 2012 Report Posted August 11, 2012 Ben Webster 'See You at the Fair' (Impulse organge/black mono orig) Great find for £2 Quote
jeffcrom Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 I got 'Rippin' & runnin'' when it came out and was disappointed in it. I played my rather battered copy this afternoon and really enjoyed it. I can see/hear how some aspects might not be your thing, like Freddie Waits' drumming. Now playing: Muhal Richard Abrams - Lifea Blinec (Arista Novus) Quote

I played my rather battered copy this afternoon and really enjoyed it. I can see/hear how some aspects might not be your thing, like Freddie Waits' drumming. You oculd be right, there, Jeff, though I don't usually have a problem with Waits. But, as I recollect, the time seemed all wrong. This morning Earl Bostic & his alto sax no 2 - King (Parlophone UK 10") A bit small that image, so here's a bigger one of the first one Gene Ludwig - Now's the time - Muse Now Jimmy Forrest, King Curtis & Oliver Nelson - Soul battle - Prestige (Ace UK) Fabulous session I never get tired of! jeffcrom Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Bud Shank & his Brazilian Friends (PJ mono). The main Brazilian friend is Joao Donato. I had this album on at my apartment about 16 years ago when my wife and I were dating; she characterized it as "bachelor pad" music. Well, she was wrong - it's way tougher than that. It gets into some depths. Shank will make you cry on "Once I Loved." I don't remember if the album "worked" that night or not. Quote
jeffcrom Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Chicago Ain't Nothin' But a Blues Band (Delmark). Different from the CD issue - missing some tracks, but with some tracks which aren't on the CD. In any case, fabulous blues from the Atomic-H label. Quote
jeffcrom Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Sam Musiker - Jewish Wedding Dances (Tikva) I added this to my growing stack of cheap klezmer LPs from the 50's and 60's today. Sam Musiker had played tenor and clarinet in Gene Krupa's band and in the band of his musical hero and father-in-law, Dave Tarras. I wish I could find a picture of the cover online; it's odd and cool. Again. And I still can't find a picture, at least not in jpeg format. Quote

So is vol 2, 'Centerpiece at the Kosei Nenkin' Reading the Vocalion thread about British reissues put me in mind to play this, by some old friends from the Sussex jazz scene Benny Simkins - Linger awhile - Flyright then Ernest Franklin - Nobody but you, Lord/Sermonette - Jewel Sermonette is the Adderley Brothers song. JSngry Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 1959/1961 sessions (produced by Herb Abramson...was this material ever released before this?). Used to like all of this type stuff, now like just some. Interesting is the frequent use of James Moody & orchestra, written (and tuned) to resemble the Ray Charles group of the time. Quote
