mjazzg Posted January 6, 2016 Report Posted January 6, 2016 Paul Bley - Ballads [ECM] my favourite Bley. Encapsulates everything about his playing and approach as I hear it Quote
mjazzg Posted January 6, 2016 Report Posted January 6, 2016 Paul Bley - Paul Bley with Gary Peacock [ECM] the opening with Ornette's 'Blues' is one of the most exciting opening statements in my collection Quote
mjazzg Posted January 6, 2016 Report Posted January 6, 2016 continuing with Paul Bley - open, to love [ECM] Paul Bley - Fragments [ECM] the latter always surprises me. Surman seems an odd choice but does work whilst the combination of Bley and Frisell isn't always successful I feel. Might've been a very interesting trio of Bley, Motian and Surman Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted January 6, 2016 Report Posted January 6, 2016 So many good Paul Bley albums. Â One of my personal favorite session is the one with Surman, Oxley, and Peacock that resulted in two staggering CDs : "in the rivers out there" and "adventure playground". Â What I wouldn't give for deluxe German double LP vinyl pressings of those!! Quote

paul secor Posted January 8, 2016 Report Posted January 8, 2016 Anthony Braxton: Six Monk's Compositions (1987) (Black Saint) I would have preferred to hear another drummer on this. Or no drummer at all - Buell Neidlinger carries the rhythm on his own. Quote
