clifford_thornton Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 Glenn Branca - The Ascension - (99 Records) guitar-army pummeling that remains quite enjoyable after all these years... Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 Jimmy Woods "conflict" (contemporary, mono white label) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 Nice - have a Vogue UK pressing of that, which sounds glorious. Really fine record, both that and Awakening. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 ESG - Come Away With ESG - (99 Records) classic oddball new wave funk that's a great evening closer. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 I'm only familiar with ESG because Unrest covered an ESG tune on their sub pop 7"! Last two records for the night: Dexter Gordon "a Swingin affair" (blue note, mono NY ear) Andrew Hill "black fire" (blue note, mono NY ear) Quote

Clunky Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 Johnny Richards -------The arrangers touch-------(Vogue UK) white label  Not played this in age because I recall being less than overwhelmed. Started with LP1 - My Fair Lady . It's ok but nothing so far that strikes me as especially memorable. Not sure if this is a keeper as I look to prune selectively. I'll try the Diablo session later tonight. Quote
Royal Oak Posted June 10, 2016 Report Posted June 10, 2016 Miles - Milestones Never had this before. It's a bit of an old chestnut I know, but what a good record. Red Garland is an absolute MF. As a side note, I never knew the tune "Milestones" was formerly simply "Miles". Quote

paul secor Posted June 10, 2016 Report Posted June 10, 2016 Bird at the Roost Volume One (Savoy Jazz) Great to hear Bird stretching out a bit - most of the performances are 4+ minutes - as opposed to the studio recordings, and taking a few chances that he might not have taken in the studio. Plus there's Miles beginning to become Miles. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 10, 2016 Report Posted June 10, 2016 Bob Downes - Electric City - (Vertigo UK swirl) As I've become familiar with the variety of musical situations Bob Downes has created for himself, not to mention the verve of his personality (which comes through the music and our email exchanges), this wild-and-wooly, bluesy and funky jazz-rock amalgam has grown on me quite a bit. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted June 11, 2016 Report Posted June 11, 2016 Paul Chambers "jazz delegation from the east" (score, USA). Likely will never find/afford the original jazz-west issue so this slightly later issue will do. Â A good session but not quite the sum of its parts that I had hoped. Art Blakey "ritual" (world pacific, mono DG USA). Now this on the other hand is a stunner; excellent album. Clifford Thornton "communications network" (third world, USA). Hmmm..finally got a NM copy but wow it's sort of a badly recorded album and a bit unfocused. Â But Nathan Davis is on it...do I keep it? Â I'm on the fence with this one... Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted June 11, 2016 Report Posted June 11, 2016 dawg.  the score is still hella rare- i have a vintage european version on that really amazing quality european vinyl, im sure it sounds better than a jazz/west original Quote

robertoart Posted June 11, 2016 Report Posted June 11, 2016 Stuff these bird in the hand losses. I had an original mint Dave Bailey Jazztime vinyl I sold off a few years later after I got it. I was beat out in a jazz collection sale by a jazz vinyl veteran who picked out an original Green Street vinyl and left me with an original Reaching Out, as a listener I thought I'd been usurped. Drats.... Quote
OliverM Posted June 11, 2016 Report Posted June 11, 2016 David S. Ware Quartet -- Live in Vilnius Just purchased this recently from No Business records, though it is one of their earlier releases. Truly one of the great quartets there were and this was their last release. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted June 11, 2016 Report Posted June 11, 2016 On a couple of levels Communications Network isn't that good, but I'm a completist and I also think that Thornton put a lot of effort into the concepts, which he felt the need to document. So it feels right to keep the record. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 12, 2016 Report Posted June 12, 2016 'Count Basie' (UK Vogue jazz double). Another one from the archive, new-testament band compilation of Roulette material that is included in the two Mosaic sets. Â Sound OK but the Mosaics are better.. Quote
