Victor Feldman 'Soviet Jazz Themes' (Ava Records, mono, 1963)

Nice group with Carmell Jones and Harold Land, among others.

??????????????????? What's it like?

I got this today and has so far only listened to it once. The unfamiliar themes are a great plus. While they are not particularly challenging or otherwise exceptional, they are fun to hear because you can be sure you haven't heard them before. And maybe there's just a slight east European tinge to some of them. Harold Land has one or two strong solos, Feldman is predictably fine on vibes. Zawinul (who plays piano on three tracks) sounds faceless and not too interesting. Solid support from Frank Butler.

To sum it up; the album's a bit uneven, but there are a couple of tracks I probably wouldn't want to be without. The sound is slightly bass-shy but otherwise of surprisingly good fidelity.

I imagine the idea came from Victor's time in Moscow with the Benny Goodman Orchestra on its State Department-sponsored tour of 1962. Local musicians who jammed with the visitors probably introduced them to these tunes.

I wish there was more recorded from that Rollins band other than 3 In Jazz and Our Man in Jazz.

I've heard a Jazz Connoisseur bootleg but it was almost unlistenable in terms of poor recording quality.

It seems there are several bootlegs, I haven't heard them.

Leonard Feather (also the producer of the album) typically takes credit for the idea in the liner notes, having brought back tapes with Russian jazz musicians given to him during that Benny Goodman tour, but since Feldman and a few others from the BG band (Phil Woods is mentioned) apparently took opportunity to jam with locals I suspect that the idea was as much his.

I'm surprised he didn't take credit for the Russian Revolution also, and name-drop about sipping cognac with Lenin during the planning stages.
