sal Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 okay I'm on the last track and I forgot how HOT this is! - This is quickly moving up on my FAV Select list... :tup Yep, that Dexter Select is nice! I've been spinning the Pendulum Select all morning. I wasn't real into this one when I first got it, but its starting to grow on me. Some VERY nice soloing on here. Quote
Guest Bixieland Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 George Wein Single... Pretty good!!!! ;) Diggin' it right now! This is a solid single. Wacky cover, though! Quote

Guest Bixieland Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 I was gonna squeeze that in when I ordered the Columbia small groups...of course there were about 10 other singles and Selects jockeying for "tag-along" status. so I axed them all and just got the Columbia. Now I wish I got, this one, that one... Quote
Guest Bixieland Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 Classic Chu Berry Columbia and Victor Sessions: Disc V Two comments I'd like to make: First, Chu was awesome. And second, Ted Kendall is awesome. Quote
Guest Bixieland Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 Does anyone get an eastern vibe on Chu? I swear he's playing with me. Like a snake charmer, eating fire in a zoot soot. Fitting it was that his nickname is of eastern origin. Quote
Enterprise Server Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings of Gerald Wilson and His Orchestra ... Lotta nice music on these discs. Quote
tranemonk Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Pendulum Select Disc 1... not sure what to expect but kinda hard to turn down a live village vanguard set!~!! Quote
tranemonk Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Initial thought.... :( I have never liked Al Foster as a drummer... (Doesn't do anything for me... - and he thinks he's great.... :o ) We'll see how the rest of the set proceeds.... Pendulum Select Disc 1... not sure what to expect but kinda hard to turn down a live village vanguard set!~!! jazzbo Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Al Foster was an incredible groove / funk drummer. Jazz. . . he has his moments! Quote
tranemonk Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 A couple of years ago when I saw him with McCoy Tyner... he was extremely unimpressive... Grinned the whole time as he was thinking he was awesome... His solos were quite underwhelming.... Now that cat I just saw McCoy with this weekend (Eric Gravatt) is a very nice drummer... great cymbal work.... Al Foster was an incredible groove / funk drummer. Jazz. . . he has his moments! Quote
tranemonk Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Pendulum Disc 2... Starting off a little better than Disc 1.. IMHO Quote

Yes Eric Gravatt. . . excellent drummer. You may be mistaking Foster's grin. . . performers developing habits, and masks, to display on stage. Better to be grinning than grimacing, or totally blank. . . . Quote

tranemonk Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 (edited) John Handy Select Discs 1 and 2... I'm finding it a tad (not much)... disappointing.... You know what it is... I was so blown away by the Zeitlin Select I listened to a few days ago... (and this Billie Holliday set I'm listening to in the car).... that everything else is just not really working for me..... now Disc 3.... For some reason... I really like the live sessions a lot more than the studio sessions.... Edited March 8, 2009 by tranemonk Quote
tranemonk Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Onto something very different... Johnny Smith Disc 3.... Oliver Nelson Disc 6 Quote
