ghost of miles Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 If you sent in the obis for 10 of the first 12 Connoisseurs, they'd send you a Blue Note watch... I actually got two of 'em by mistake and gave the extra one to a friend. The battery ran down on mine and I've never bothered to get it replaced, but it was a cool little thing to have--I should get it fixed. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 I have it too. I've put about three batteries in it, but it's sat around most of the time because I never wear a watch except on special occasions, and now on special occasions I don't even seem to wear a watch either! Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 31, 2004 Author Report Posted August 31, 2004 I never wear a watch except on special occasions, and now on special occasions I don't even seem to wear a watch either! I don't blame you--who has the time? B-) Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 I've got one. Wore it as my 'daily watch' for about three or four years. Then a friend gave me his 'much-more-expensive' BN watch (I think those things sold for like $60 ), cuz he decided he never wears watches (never!!), so he'd rather somebody else had it -- somebody that would actually get some use out of it. I couldn't say 'no', so I've got both now. Don't wear either one all the time, but I do break them out for particular occasions. Quote
Jim Dye Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 Mine sat in a dresser drawer unused for years. I sold it last year on eBay for 20 bucks or so. Quote
wolff Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 You could always get the Miles Davis Worldtimer. Quote
JSngry Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 I had the requisite obis, but: A) I don't wear a watch either B) I kinda liked having the obis and C) The combination of Blue Note and timepieces has a less than illustrious history, as witnessed by Quote
JohnS Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 Don't have this one but I won a Miles Davis promo watch a few years back. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 I don't have the plastic "Connoisseur" watch, but I do have the more expensive (yes, $60 was the price) metal/blue leather watch. I had to replace the band... hard to do when it's blue leather... and it still runs great. I wear it on occassion but it doesn't have a date window which annoys the heck out of me. I didn't get the Connoisseur watch because there were 2 or 3 titles in the first batch of 12 CDs that I never wanted to buy, even for a watch. I still dont have "Symphony For Improvisers" or "The Empty Foxhole"... don't miss 'em either. Later, Kevin Quote
sidewinder Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 I seem to recall that I was 1 short of the required 10 OBIs and couldn't be bothered at the time. So I bought a $20 Rolex in Kuala Lumpur.. Quote

Jim R Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 I still have all those OBI's in a box somewhere. Never got motivated to go after the watch. Besides, I never go anywhere without one of these babies: Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 I have a very old Swatch that actually has a kodalith of Art Blakey on it! It's very cool!!! Quote
JSngry Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 I still dont have "Symphony For Improvisers" or "The Empty Foxhole"... don't miss 'em either. But they miss YOU! Do you hear them crying your name? Do you see that strange rustling movement in the shrubs outside your house? Do you hear the "click" on the phone lines every time you make a call? Have you seen any pods under your bed lately? It is those discs, my friend, doing all that is within there power to unite with you. They are powerful creatures, and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal, including anthromorphisation. Resistance is futile. My advice? Buy them anyway. You don't have to actually LISTEN to them, just have them in your possession. That is the only way that they will be happy. And that is the only way that they will let you have a moment's peace. Hear me now and believe me later. This from one who knows. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 Sorry Jim, but I'm with Kevin on this one. I had "Symphony.." and tired of it quickly. Gato sounded all over the place, while Cherry had a few good parts. Never was a big Coleman fan...well, actually I am...George Coleman, that is! Quote
JSngry Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 The spirits are restless tonight. They miss you, too. BEWARE! Quote

Who knows, you might actually learn something/get some enjoyment out of them. But I basically take your comment to mean that you dislike avant-garde/freely improvised music; too bad, you're missing out on a lot of great music. Quote

But I basically take your comment to mean that you dislike avant-garde/freely improvised music; too bad, you're missing out on a lot of great music. Yup, heard both of them... even owned "Symphony For Improvisors" for a few years after I found it cheap in a used bin. I just don't like them. I am not a fan of frenetic music of any style and these 2 Blue Note dates get pretty busy in a couple of places. When a tune starts going out, particularly screeching trumpets and saxes, I just fail to get into it. It's my problem, obviously not yours. As for "The Empty Foxhole", Ornette's violin just sounded too weird. Actually, the whole date, with 10 year old Denardo banging away and Ornette playing violin & trumpet like a 10 year old just sounded wrong for some reason. If I heard it today, I might like it just fine. 10 years ago when the CD came out, I didn't. Hey, it's not like my collection is somehow deficient because I don't have these 2 discs. I have more than a few others to listen to. Excuse me... there's something rustling around in the bushes outside my window. It's... it looks like a chipmunk. No wait... it's brass... is that a trumpet? Hey, get out of my bushes! Ahhh! It's chasing me... I can't escape... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 I've got the Cherry Mosaic, and my favorite of his three BN albums is, by far, "Complete Communion". The other two aren't bad, but if I had to pick one... Quote

The other two aren't bad, but if I had to pick one... I just re-listened to "Complete Communion" on my way into work this morning. I still like this one out of the 3 Cherry did for BN. I still have a burn of "Where Is Brooklyn" from the Mosaic box and I play it every now & then. It is definitely my least favorite date. I keep trying to get into it. Maybe some day. Back to topic... has anyone else gotten asked if you worked for Blue Note when you wear their gear to a show? I stopped wearing my Blue Note golf shirt to the Regattabar because of this. Later, Kevin Quote
pryan Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 Kevin, you should keep wearing that shirt and if anyone asks you the same question again you could respond in the affirmative. Pretend you know what the upcoming re-issues are (although sometimes I guess you do actually know what they are going to be), and maybe they'll buy you drinks. Quote
