wesbed Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 (edited) I have an eight-year-old car. I purchased the car new and have taken good care of the car. Still, eight years is eight years. While I enjoy and need to have a car, I greatly dislike making car payments. My car was paid-off eight years ago. I saved the money and wrote one check to purchase the car. At this point in time, the idea of making car payments seems absolutely repulsive to me. It cuts in to my Mosaic money. I spent $1000 on various car repairs last month. I expect the car will be good for another year. So, probably, no more payments for another year or more. I've always had a personal preference that the only person who washes my car is me. Although the car's body is still in like-new condition, my interest in washing the car has decreased as the car has aged. The paint seems kind of dull. Washing the car just hasn't been as fun anymore. I got lazy and took my car to the local car wash. My car went through the automated system. The system added a wax rinse to my car (which I believed would do nothing). However, my car is now shining like when it was new. The result of the wax mixture has me feeling like I have a new car again. Also, the car wash added a fresh scent to the interior of the car giving the car more of a new car smell versus a used car smell. A clean car seems to run better than a dirty car. And, it was fun watching my car go through the car wash. I might take the car back for another washing next weekend. I don't know, maybe I'm easily entertained. vibes Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 I totally understand what you mean. I have to get my car washed at least twice a month or it drives me crazy. Since I live in an apartment and have no access to a hose or other manual wash facilities, I have to use an automated car wash. I always get the most expensive one, with the wax and underbody anti-rust treatment. I've always been happy with it, except for one thing - it doesn't seem to do a very good job of washing my rear bumper. Since my car is black, the duller paint in that area is very noticeable. I suppose maybe I should just take a bucket outside and pre-wash that part before going to the automated wash. Quote
brownie Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 I wait for the next rain to wash my car B-) Or almost! I use my car in Paris once or twice a week. It sits in a garage most of the time. I use it mainly for quick trips around France or for holidays (usually abroad). The car gets an automatic washing after each long drives. The quicker it's done, the better! The car still looks almost new after four years. Was at the Paris auto show today to find out whether I would fall in love with a new one. And did not. Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 I'm weird when it comes to this. Can't stand clutter in the house - totally tolerate it in (and on) the car. Never been one to wash by hand, and since we moved to a neighborhood that doesn't seem to have any car washes, its been even longer between them. And that's despite the fact that I park under a pine tree now. We need a "shoulder shrug" smilie. Quote
Phil Meloy Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 I've never understood the reasoning behind letting a car wash put wax on your windows. Surely this creates a situation where dirt then gets stuck in the wax thus obscuring your vision. Quote
JSngry Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 Rose Royce tells me that the wax they spray on is specially formulated to not stay on glass. Supposedly it rinses right off. I'm waiting for Franklyn Ajaye to confirrm this, though. In the meantime, don't smoke dope. Fry your hair. Quote

Sounds more like a whitewash to me. Forget Franklyn Ajaye - you'll only be palmed off with the official corporate policy statement. Nothing less than a full independent public enquiry will do. Lives could be at risk here. Edited September 28, 2004 by Phil Meloy Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 I've always felt that road dirt adds an extra layer of protection to the cars finish; that's very important at resale time! Quote

jazzbo Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 A friend of mine in Ohio used to look for cheap "fender flappers" (cars that had rusted out from the winter salts from the bottom up) with excellent hoods and dashboards. His take was if you look out over the wheel and see the hood all nice and new looking and a nice new looking dashboard. . . it was a nice new looking car! Quote
catesta Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 Once a week, every week. A friend of mine owns a hand car wash and detail shop. I also get a wax/detail every couple of months. I hate a dirty ride. Quote

wesbed Posted September 28, 2004 Author Report Posted September 28, 2004 I hate a dirty ride. Keeping a car clean is somewhat easier when you live in southern Arizona. Not much rain and no rust. If you can just keep the dust knocked off... B-) Quote
