Just got a new Braxton LP from ebay, seems to be a selection of stuff from 1971 on the Italian Giants of Jazz label featuring some quartet tracks, a duo, a solo and 5 tubas! Good buy it now price too.

Can't wait for it to come now.

Also, incase anyone didn't know, Black Saint have been added to eMusic UK so there's a whole load of Braxton to be had there. I already have the Monk album and the Creative Orchestra album and they are both corking.

That's a mid-1980s reissue of half of the tracks that appeared on The Complete Braxton 1971.

It's the material that was left off the Braxton Mosaic. :tup

I really do want the Braxton Mosaic but can't justify that sort of money for a reissue. I don't mind paying £10-14 for a new artist LP but the vast amount of money that Mosaic charge just doesn't sit well with me even though I am assured that the contents are of the highest quality.

I can't keep up. 2008 releases so far include:

Creative Orchestra (Guelph) 2007 (Spool)

Quartet (Moscow) 2008 (Leo)

Toronto (Duets) 2007 (Barnyard) with Kyle Brenders

The Complete Arista Recordings of Anthony Braxton (Mosaic, 8-CD)

Beyond Quantum (Tzadik)

Nine Compositions (DVD) 2003 (Rastascan, audio DVD)

Quartet (GTM) 2006 (Important, 4-CD)

Four Improvisations (Duo) 2007 (Clean Feed, 4-CD) with Joe Morris

Piano Music (1968-2000) (Leo, 9-CD, ltd ed) perf. by Genevieve Foccroulle

I have Quartet (GTM) 2006 (which is excellent), Nine Compositions (DVD) 2003, the Tzadik (very good) and the excellent Quartet (Moscow) 2008 (Leo).

I think I'm going to have to skip this one. The Braxton list linked to the blog of a guy who went to several of those shows, and he thought the whole run would make for a fine single CD. Plus the band is a pickup group of unknown Italians (the blogger was unimpressed by the drummer).

Is anyone (beyond Bernie Madoff) keeping up with all the Braxton issues?

been wondering the same myself.

It took me over a year to really absorb some of the Arista material where I was on a personal level with it.

I'm on a different continuum right now anyway.........

Just realised. I class myself as a big Braxton fan but haven't bought any of his new releases this year.

That's a pretty poor show really considering the fact that I try and support artists releasing worthwhile music now and not 50 years ago. If I get some money through any time soon I might rectify that by doing an internet order of a few of his most recent releases.

Either that or I might get a few as downloads from Leo.

I pulled my Brax collection so far together the other day and I plan on marking down the years that they were recorded alongside the comp numbers to see where the gaps are. I'd really like to have at least one item from every year and then have a marathon listening session of one album for every year he has been recording over a week period.

Anyone ever used the blog site inconstantsol? I'm not sure if I am allowed to link to it due to ts and cs but it's worth tracking down to hear some of the DCW stuff from this year that wasn't released and some out of print Braxton.

Edit: Just went for a browse on the Leo site and was redirected to the website www.lulu.com with all of Braxton's Leo releases for download in what looks like VBR for around £3.50 per CD. I've picked up the Moscow 2008 Quartet and I'm listening to it now. The electronics seem to act as a launch pad for everyone. I'm 20 minutes in so far and there hasn't been a wasted gesture.

I'm thinking of getting one of the 1985 British albums as well. Is one better than the others?

You'll want all three. London is my favourite, with Coventry not far behind. Coventry also has the added bonus of interviews with Braxton. Beware of the 1-disc bootleg version, however.

What an amazing batch of releases! Thanks to everyone for the recommendations. The Diamond Curtain Wall group's CDs are now high on my "short list" for purchase.

Agreed - I wouldn't want to be without any of them. And with one vote each already to Coventry and London, just to illustrate how good they all are, Birmingham might just be my favourite!

Also - yes yes yes yes yes yes to the Diamond Curtain Wall stuff...the trio on Victo is awesome IMHO.

I could (and sometimes do) blow my whole music buying budget on Braxton. I can't keep up! I would really like to get the Moscow (Leo) and the 6-disc standards set, and if I could afford it I would get that 9-disc piano set.

Your ears will thank you for not listening to them for some time, he can be really far out, except his two or three collaborations with max Roach which are bearable. try Gene Ammons instead.

Personally, I think that I'll go for Braxton, Jug and Albert Ammons...
