Guest Chaney Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 (edited) As these'll probably never be released on CD, I'm wondering if anyone might have these two 2-LP sets, released on the Horo label, and if so, might I get a CD copy? If not, anyone ever hear these and have an opinion? Thanks! Sam Rivers: Black Africa! Taking place in the Umbria region of central Italy, this festival is a mini tour by both participating musicians and the public of the little towns in the region. The performances take place in the piazzas or parks of the village, and no entrance fee is charged. A nominal charge is made for bus transportation to the villages. These two double albums document the performances by the Sam Rivers tour: the villages of Villalago and Perugia." --Carl Brauer, CADENCE / Vol. 4, No. 4 / June 1978 Sam Rivers: Black Africa! porcy62 Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 I will look around for them. It might be easier for me in Italy. If I will find them I will let you know. Quote
Late Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Has anything from the Horo label ever been reissued on compact disc? If not, I wonder why. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 I have a few Don Pullen and George Adams on Horo. Who else was on this label? Quote
Guest Chaney Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Thanks porcy62! ~~~~~~~ I did a search of the board before I began this thread and I read mention of a rather suspicious Downtown Music Gallery offering: just got this sun ra on horo called "new steps". album is from 1978. it is a CD reissue. i got it at downtown music gallery-not sure if it is totally legit reissue. it is quartet with gilmore, ray and ali. ra plays some bass on a basset and there is little synth. the sound is not incredible but for some reason i really like this album. they do "my favorite things" nicely. the whole thing is real laidback-just one synth song really and one vocal song. the groove of the album sort of reminds me of the first song on "lanquidity" but more laid back and quiet and non-electric. the basset adds something too-sounds not too different than regular bass but it is a bit more bouncy. just got this sun ra on horo called "new steps". album is from 1978. it is a CD reissue. i got it at downtown music gallery-not sure if it is totally legit reissue. Legit? Mmmm, yeah. What label is it on? I have doubts that its a legit release. (As far as I know, the Horo label owner hasn't licensed anything for reissue.) http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...80entry245063 New member Jesse posted this over at the JC: Sam Rivers: Black Africa '76 Rivers:ss/ts/fl/p Daley: tuba/euphonium Sydney Smart: d Pullen: p I've been rhapsodizing about some of these Horo recordings lately, as I am going back through a few I own, following a long spell of neglect. Michael Smith, Laboratorio Della Querica, this Rivers date. This live appearance at the Umbria Jazz Fest, '76, is stage-levitating & masterful & remains a thrilling work out on all of Rivers' axes. With a chugging, loping, occassionally mellifluous Daley on tuba/euphonium, Pullen leaping in well into the extended tenor section (!) as if he were in the front row & couldn't restrain himself. Rivers' life time of work on several instruments, writing for every ensemble size imaginable & with intense creativity in notated & free musics, is staggering. Highly recommended for lovers of free music with ideas, dynamics, shape & drama. (Hope Jesse doesn't mind me stealing his post.) I have a few Don Pullen and George Adams on Horo. Tom in RI Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 The owner of the label (Aldo Sinesi?) had been offering lps for sale over the web 3 or 4 years ago. Quote
porcy62 Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 I usually find a couple of HORO lps at month, here in Roma. I've got Shepp and Konitz, not bad for 5 euros. I am not very impressed by artistic value, but agreable records. Quote

Bright Moments Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Doesn't cut it with me. sorry mate! hope we can still be pals! Quote
robviti Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Sorry to hear that. hey chuck the album is oop- and not coming to cd - EVER! if someone really wants to hear the music shouldn't they have the opportunity? otherwise it is lost forever! "lost" how is it lost? it exists in the form of a 2-lp set, one that can be purchased. the fact is someone doesn't want to pay what it costs to own this rare item. i'm not saying your actions are wrong necessarily, just your rationale. what i think is wrong is members of this board openly soliciting the trade/sale/whatever of copyrighted material on a board graciously run by a band who is planning a future within the music industry. why would anyone want to incur even the littlest bit of risk to them, just to own a hard-to-find recording? there are more subtle ways to do this without insulting our hosts. clifford_thornton Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Chaney may not have a turntable. But otherwise, I think this sort of thing is better left to PMs rather than in the open (yes, I've made that mistake as well). Quote
