JohnS Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Things are slipping here again, nominations or a volunteer please. Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 If no one´s taking it, I´d suggest some Cecil Taylor, as any of his albums have been picked as AOTW. For example, "Silent tongues" (Freedom, 1974). Quote
Nate Dorward Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Speaking of which isn't it time couw update the list of AOTWs? It only goes up to Oct 2nd. Silent Tongues is good though I wonder what remains to be said about much-discussed figures like Cecil Taylor on the board. But maybe people will prove me wrong.... It's been a while since I listened to that one (only have it on vinyl). Quote
sidewinder Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 I'm happy to volunteer to do an AOTW over the next few weeks. Quote
JohnS Posted November 3, 2004 Author Report Posted November 3, 2004 Shall we go for EKE BBB's suggestion of Silent Tongues? Quote
Nate Dorward Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 Sure, sounds OK to me. I could do an AOTW at some point if it falls fallow again. Not sure what I'd go for--perhaps Helen Merrill's disc with Clifford Brown or Helen Humes' The Songs I Like to Sing (amazing date with Ben Webster, Art Pepper & Teddy Edwards). Or something contemporary. Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 ... I could do an AOTW at some point if it falls fallow again. Not sure what I'd go for--perhaps Helen Merrill's disc with Clifford Brown ... Yes, pleeeeaze! Quote

Not sure what I'd go for--perhaps Helen Merrill's disc with Clifford Brown ... Yes, pleeeeaze! Yeah it's a great one! (I keep on telling people that Brown's solos on this one are far more commanding than on the date with Sarah Vaughan--some real stunners, esp his solo on "Yesterdays" that references "Parker's Mood".) But I'd have to doublecheck the disc wasn't already discussed at length in the Merrill thread--I recall there's a pretty long & devoted Merrill thread here somewhere. Anyway, now I'd better go dig out my vinyl of Silent Tongues.... is that Taylor's very first solo LP? Quote
Alon Marcus Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 What about the shoulder tapping? Wasn't that supposed to work that way? Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 What about the shoulder tapping? Wasn't that supposed to work that way? It was. Maybe its time to adopt the BFT signup method to the AOTW? One advantage here might be that people could announce their future picks far enough in advance that people could have plenty of lead time to either give some listening to the album or get it in hand well in time for the discussion. Quote
Brad Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 I haven't done this in a long time but I'll volunteer. Just let me know when. Quote

That is an advantage, for example I don't have this week's spontaneously chosen "Silent Tongues". I'm sure I'm missing a good opportunity to study Taylor's music. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 Yes I'd vote for switching things to a schedule a la the BFTs--it would I think make for more continuity & also permit greater preparation. Quote
Alon Marcus Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 I haven't done this in a long time but I'll volunteer. Just let me know when. I'll be glad to volunteer too sometime in the next few weeks, if it makes easier for someone my choice will be "This is our music" by Ornette Coleman. Quote

I'll be glad to volunteer too sometime in the next few weeks, if it makes easier for someone my choice will be "This is our music" by Ornette Coleman. I don't want to be greedy since I did an AOTW earlier this year, but can someone (not necessarily me) nominate "Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants" for the week of Christmas Eve? It's the 50th anniversary of the Monk & Miles session and it would be cool to discuss it. Guy Quote
Leeway Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 (edited) I'd be interested in doing one. I do not see Art Pepper on the list of AOTWs. Thinking of doing his "Straight Life" album, a really fine later-Pepper album, not often discussed. Edited November 9, 2004 by Leeway Quote
Nate Dorward Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 You should pair Miles + the Modern JAzz Giants then with Bags' Groove which has the remainder of the session. Quote
Alon Marcus Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 O.K. but who is going to do the dirty job of organizing and keeping the list of future AOTW? Quote
JohnS Posted November 6, 2004 Author Report Posted November 6, 2004 (edited) I like this thread. I'm happy to have a go at keeping things organised and running smoothly. If there are no objections to me doing it those who have volunteered in this thread so so far will get first crack of the whip. Edited November 6, 2004 by JohnS Quote

Guy Berger Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 You should pair Miles + the Modern JAzz Giants then with Bags' Groove which has the remainder of the session. Will do. Unless anybody strenuously objects, I'm going to claim the week of Dec 19-25 for these two albums. Guy Quote
Brad Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 Is someone going to do a master thread like Mike has done for BTF? I'm willing to do it if no one steps forward Quote
JohnS Posted November 8, 2004 Author Report Posted November 8, 2004 (edited) Brad, I'm happy to do this, see above. John My plan is to keep a master list going scheduling members for a few weeks ahead. Pming them a week before there are due to post. I'll start this week if there are no objections, kicking off with Nate Dorward on 14 Nov and Sidewinder on 21 November. Edited November 8, 2004 by JohnS Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 I'd like to do one sometime, have a couple of albums in mind.... Quote
Late Posted November 9, 2004 Report Posted November 9, 2004 (edited) Maybe sometime in January, or February? If so, just tap! Dewey Redman: The Ear of the Behearer ... it's the first time I've actually liked listening to the musette, an otherwise torturous instrument. Edited November 9, 2004 by Late Quote
