mrjazzman
I have no respect for valve trombonists, take Brookmeyer off the list. If j. j.
mrjazzman
cannon-addict.......you have a lot of nerve trying to take something away from two of the great jazz masters(Dex&Jackie(who is still alive) and praising the noise that dolphy and coleman used to make. it may not have been noise then but definitly is today. Bop and Hard Bop will never grow old because it is a child of the blues. "Blusenik" by Jackie is one of my all time favorites. I'll take Jackie and LTD over Coleman and Dolphy any day...........mrjazzman
AllenLowe
instead of removing Brookmeyer from the list, why don't you just remove his valves? And than we can take away Dolphy's mouthpiece, and than you will be happy -
mrjazzman
can't remove his valves but can remove him from the list of elite, he can drive an automatic, why can't he learn to drive a stick...............
Free For All
I (as a trombonist of the slide variety) am certainly aware of the dismissal of valve trombonists as "cheaters" or just "inferior" trombonists. I happen to think of the valve trombone as an entirely different instrument (with its own set of advantages/disadvantages) and I always can tell the difference between the two on a recording. Check out "Our Love Is Here To Stay" on the Mosaic JJ box (or on the "Dial JJ" recording)-that ain't no slide trombone he's playing; actually it's not a valve trombone either....... I have no hostility towards Tizol or Brookmeyer or McConnell or Enevoldsen or Fahn etc.- they're just as unpopular as slide trombonists are! Actually, I enjoy Brookmeyer's playing quite a bit- he can develop motives like a mofo. Not a bad writer either. But the point is taken, BB really shouldn't be on this list; there should be a separate list for the button-pushers. BTW, I voted for Slide. I'm confused by polls like this- are we choosing based on life's work or current prowess? Curtis is the current leader, but I don't think he is playing as well as Slide right now, yet he has a more impressive resume, having been the only trombonist to record in a small group w/Trane and Bud Powell. Kalo
What do y'all think of slide trumpet? I voted for Roswell Rudd, but there's a lot of great 'bone players out there. I agree that Mangelsdorf and Lewis shoulda been in there, Priester, too. Edited June 9, 2005 by Kalo

porcy62
If some of you are interested in young trombonists, maybe you should have a listen to this guy http://www.gianlucapetrella.com/ I heard him some weeks ago in a trio with a drummer and an organist (I think he played an original Hammond of late fifties, not really sure) and they smoke. Standards, R'n B, Hard Bop...you name it! Actually I never heard his records as sideman but the concert was great. BTW my vote is for Roswell.
