Several other posters thought this release deserved its own thread, and I agree with them:

Various Artists - Detroit Jazz Before Motown, 1945-53 (Uptown) Aug 1

— rare and previously unissued recordings featuring Wardell Gray, Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell, Willie Anderson and others; compiled by Jim Gallert and Lars Bjorn, authors of Before Motown: A History of Jazz in Detroit, 1920-1960 (University of Michigan Press)

BEFORE MOTOWN is a great book, btw, a fascinating regional history that will appeal to anybody who's interested in some or all of the great jazz artists who have come out of Detroit. There's also now a website here.

I can comment on some of what will be included.

Bird, October 1949, Nows The Time (partial)

Wardell, 1948, Lester Leaps In, What Is This Thing Called Love (both partial)

Frank Foster/Tommy Flanagan/Alvin Jackson/Art Mardigan, 40 mins, 1950 (all complete performances, sound not bad at all)

Barry Harris, various tracks from 1950

BuBu Turner Trio w/Kenny Burrell, three tracks supposedly predating the Feb 51 Dizzy session, thus making them KBs debut on wax.

Willie Anderson, all 8 commercial recs (Yusef included on two titles - brief solo on one) + two tracks rec at his home

I will second David's thoughts on the book; a great read :tup . Good to see thoughts from Jim as well!

Is that from the Detroit October 1949 gig with the Phil Hill Quintet that is listed in the Bregman-Bukowski-Sachs Charlie Parker discography?

The content you listed makes this release right at the top of my ToGet list just under the Parker-Gillespie album Uptown that we have been been kept salivating on for months...

Is there an expected release date?

Jazzmatazz says Aug. 1. Hopefully Jim Gallert can keep us updated on this thread.

Unfortunately, that's plenty of time for it to be pushed back and pushed back like the Bird release.

But here's hoping it won't be!

Brownie, yeah, the Bird is from October '49 with Phil Hill's group. The Wardell is also with Phil's band - Wardell was a regular guest soloist at the Blue Bird Inn during this time.

We also have some wonderful live Candy Johnson tracks from 1948, Ted Buckner (as) from 1946, and other stuff by Detroit guys who seldom ventured past the city limits.

We're pushing for August 'cause the Ford Detroit Jazz Festival takes place on Labor Day, and this is the ideal market for the CDs. Bob should have everything in his hot little hands within two weeks (except the notes LOL...).

I emailed Dr. Sunenblick in January of last year regarding the status of the project. Apparently, there was an issue with the transfer from the acetates that he was hoping to resolve later that spring. I will be contacting him regarding another matter in the next week or two and will follow up with him then.
