Damn, for that kind of money you should just find someone to bur... oh, never mind. :D

As Michael Cuscuna always tells me, don't worry, it will get reissued. Everything does. All it takes is time. If you just "have to have it", $75 is what it takes on half.com. However, I'm betting a copy would go for less on eBay.

You know what's the worst about this being on half.com? If someone had it in their "wish list", it could have been sent out by the seller already. How does that work if the price is too high anyway?

Am I the only one who thinks a CD on "half.com" should be sold at a discount? What does the "half" mean here?

I didn't know this was that rare. I have seen it around but didn't pull the trigger. I guess next time I'll grab it.

no, you're not... i'm foolish enough to think of it as a discount house, too.

FWIW, the rajah ain't all that.

I actually think The Rajah is a pretty cool date, but not at that price!

There are some bargains on half.com though. I heartily recommend the Ray Drummond cd you can find sealed for $.75 (100 times cheaper than the Morgan cd!) "Vignettes". . . ! It's a good one.

I got it on ebay a couple of years ago. I'm sure I didn't pay more than $20. I think it's a darn good date. FWIW, here's the AMG review:

This long-lost Lee Morgan session was not released for the first time until it was discovered in the Blue Note vaults by Michael Cuscuna in 1984; it has still not been reissued on CD. Originals by Cal Massey, Duke Pearson ("Is That So") and Walter Davis, in addition to a couple of surprising pop tunes ("What Not My Love" and "Once in My Lifetime") and Morgan's title cut, are well-played by the quintet (which includes the trumpeter/leader, Hank Mobley on tenor, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Billy Higgins). Much of the music is reminiscent of The Jazz Messengers and that may have been the reason that it was lost in the shuffle for Morgan was soon investigating modal-oriented tunes. Despite its neglect, this is a fine session that Lee Morgan and hard bop fans will want.

I think my TOCJ cost the equivalent of £7 or so (bought it in Tel Aviv). I'll have to put it on ebay and live with the DMM vinyl..

I've been living with the vinyl since it was first issued. Interestingly, I was in a shop about 10 years ago in which Blue Note-issued cassettes (!) were being sold for $1 apiece. At the time, both of our cars had cassette players only so I picked up a bunch, including, you guessed it, THE RAJAH. IF rareness alone determined price, that cassette should fetch more than $75, but I know better. B-)

I think it was about a year ago when Hiroshi Tanno e-mailed me to ask whether I would like a copy of this. I had once tried to order it from him not knowing that it was oop. He had apparently saved that info. So, I bought a new sealed copy for 2000 yen. Slightly lower than $20 at that time. A good date, but not worth $75.

Hey, we're not that old ! ;)

I recall that it was released around 1985/86. Here in Europe it came out as one of the infamous French Marconi Pathe Rouge DMM vinyls (which were about the only BN you could find around here at that time, on 'domestic' release). Hank Mobley 'Far Away Lands' came out around the same time. I've always enjoyed these two sessions. Neither of them masterpieces but hugely satisfying nevertheless.

I bought a copy a few years back for $10 or something. Then in 2004, I ran into another copy in Dearborn. I bought it in order to offer it to the guys on this board, and I noticed a scratch which affected play... :( I returned it for the $8 I paid.

At least I still have mine, but I'll think of you Kevin if I run into it again...and I get mine cheap! B-)

Oh, I guess my post didn't come across right... I have this date and I like it.

What I meant with my post here was that if I had known it was rare, I would have bought it for trade bait. I usually buy hard-to-find stuff and put it in a rack above my PC. When someone posts a "looking for" thread, I usually pm them telling them I have it. I used to go the eBay route but I got sick of the hassles. Besides, I'd rather get it to fellow board members.

Thanks for thinking of me though.

Now, if you ever come across a reasonably priced Shorty Rogers Mosaic... Definitely drop me line! :D

Brad,

I din't use a smiley face, but my post was intended to be tongue-in-cheek. The line I used about the originals not catching on is a standard statement in AMG reviews which I find totally moronic. In what way does he expects them to catch on? Very few jazz tunes ever become super 'hits'. So what does this statement mean?

I love the Rajah, just like every other Lee Morgan record.

Bertrand.
