Popper Lou Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 When Richie Powell and Clifford Brown died, who was driving? Quote
bertrand Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Who barely knew how to drive, as legend goes. Bertrand. Quote
brownie Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Richie Powell's wife Nancy was driving the Buick car on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the early morning of June 26, 1956, a rainy day. They were on their way to Chicago for a club gig. The car hurtled over an embankment. All three died. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 I guess ken Burns got THAT story right. Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Curley Russell was still grieving about this 20 years later and said that everybody knew his wife was a terrible driver - a horrible and unnecessary waste - Quote
BbM7 Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 During a late-1970s conversation with Max Roach, he made a passing/distant comment about the incident. I could almost feel his distress. (I'm no psychologist.) I knew better than to ask any questions. Quote
Alexander Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Although all accounts agree that Nancy Powell was an inexperienced driver, wouldn't you say that the late hour and inclement weather conditions were as much to blame for the accident? Or am I mixing this up with the accident that took Scott LaFaro's life? Quote
Jazz Kat Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 The rain had something to do with the car Brown was in. It didnt help Nancy's already horrible driving skills. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 I've been to the location on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bedford. It's a tricky place to navigate and I can easily see how someone could easily blow it, particularly with poor visibility. Mike Quote
Jazz Kat Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Was the picture they showed on Ken Burns the actual place? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Considering Burns's concern for historical accuracy in other photos used in the series, probably not. It seems doubtful. But I really can't say because you're asking me to remember something I saw once on TV over four years ago (and like most people I've talked to, I was falling asleep during it) and have been trying to forget ever since, then compare it to someplace I saw once..... Jazz Kat Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 (edited) I hated it! Edited April 10, 2005 by Jazz Kat Quote
bertrand Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 I predict this thread will be going in an entirely different direction in the next few days. Bertrand. Quote
JSngry Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 Hopefully not in the same direction as that car... Quote
tonym Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 I watched that over and over in the summer of 2002 I believe. (Mainly the last four parts) I always loved it. The first episodes, I only watched once, but I have seen parts 7-10 probaly about 20 times. You have too much time on your hands. Quote
sheldonm Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 When Richie Powell and Clifford Brown died, who was driving? ....go to a Benny Golson show; he'll tell you the entire story. Quote
