Received an email from Nameless Sound the other day. Roscoe Mitchell will be doing a week's residency in Houston in late March, culminating in an awards gala on March 28.

kh,

Thanks for the info. Most tickets to Wynton are $68 each! No thanks!

The old price/demand ratio. I might go if it were in the $5-10 range. The last time I saw Wynton, quite a few years back at McFarlin Auditorium, was mighty boring, I do recall.

Greg Osby, March 19 at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton.

Wow. With his band or a local group?

Don't know. His website has not been updated, and the Dans Silverleaf website gives no information.

Especially if.

Or if he wants to go back to his M-Base stuff, there's a core of local players who could really nail that stuff with enough lead time.

I'd rather hear that than some straight-ahead "jamming", if you know what I mean.

I saw Osby years ago at a club in Deep Ellum. He was part of a Blue Note all-star band with Stephon Harris, Jason Moran, and others whose names I've forgotten. The whole crew couldn't have been more disinterested, with the exception of Harris. Still, I'm interested in going...

I've seen him several times, actually, and he's been consistently good--back in the late 1980s at the Caravan with Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, paired with Gary Thomas; with his quartet with Jason Moran at a Blue Note concert in New York around 1998 (by far the best set of the concert), and a couple of times at the Village Vanguard and Jazz Standard with his own bands in the last ten years or so,

The Roscoe residency includes a duo concert with Alvin Fielder. This will be their first time playing together since 1969.

My quintet has been going through some personnel changes. We have lost one guitar player and have gained another.

Todd Parsnow is playing with us now. He currently is on Roy Hargrove's band. So when he is on tour we have to sub out his chair, or go chordless. Come check him out if you are in town. He is a wonderful musician, and he really brings a lot to the table.

Our steady gig has moved to another location at last. We had been playing Mondays. As of this month we will be playing every Tuesday at a nice place across the street from the State Fairgrounds in Dallas.

The Meridian Room has a top notch menu, yet everything is very affordable. They also have a vast beer selection, including many micro brews.

recommendedations:

Crawfish Chili

Portabello Sandwich

Cuban Sandwich

We will be there starting March 5th, playing 9 - midnight. No cover.

Greg Waits - trombone

Jim Sangrey (aka Frank Brutali) - tenor sax

Todd Parsnow - guitar

Mark Wilson - bass

Garry Granger - drums

See you Tuesdays?! Drop in & say hello.

Guest Artist Recital: Jean-Michel Pilc, Jazz Piano - Room: Kenton Hall Building: College of Music Building When: 3-5-2013 @ 8:00 PM

Now a US resident for more than a decade, French native Jean-Michel Pilc taught himself to play piano. After coming to New York, Pilc formed a trio with François Moutin (bass) and drummer Ari Hoenig. The trio became a popular fixture in Big Apple venues such as the Blue Note, Birdland, Knitting Factory, and Sweet Basil.

In 2000 Pilc’s trio released a pair of acclaimed recordings, Jean-Michel Pilc Trio - Together - Live at Sweet Basil, NYC - Vol. 1 & 2 (ARecords). The trio then released Welcome Home in 2002 followed in 2003 by Cardinal Points, which features Jean-Michel's extended work, “Trio Sonata,” created through a grant from Chamber Music America's New Works: Creation and Presentation Program, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. In 2004, Pilc released a solo recording, Follow Me, then came full circle in 2005 with a live trio recording, Live at the Iridium, New York, introducing his new ensemble with Thomas Bramerie on bass and Mark Mondesir on drums. The trio released a follow-up, New Dreams, in 2007. Pilc’s last two albums were both released in 2011 on the Motema label Essential, a live solo piano recording, and Threedom, featuring his legendary trio with François Moutin & Ari Hoenig, which has re-formed in 2010 under the collective name Pilc Moutin Hoenig. When not performing solo or with his trio, Pilc teaches masterclasses and clinics.
