Just snagged this box on the net and am wondering if anyone here has it. Have all the Trane Deluxe Edition CDs and really dig those. However, didn't have all the extra takes the box set does. Also, don't think Bags and Trane has been reissued on the DE.

Any comments?

It's a keeper! :tup

Great in both incarnations, but I sure love my LP set. If you didn't know, the cd set has the music in chronological order on 6 cds, whereas the LP set reproduces all the original albums, including "The Coltrane Legacy" and "Alternate Takes." The previously unreleased outtakes are in a two LP set with the Scotch Tape box for the cover. I believe its a 12 LP set...

Having all those beautiful covers full-size and in perfect condition is just so Deluxe...it boggles my mind... :excited::w:cool:

I have this on CD and don't listen to it as often as I should.

But I find that's true of most boxes -- they're just unwieldy is all, and sometimes sorting out which track is from which album is a pain. I recently went back to my Dolphy Prestige box, and that one definitely has that problem, not to mention the fact that many albums begin as the final track on one disc and then continue on the following disc. Still it's a treasure trove, as is this Atlantic 'trane box -- I'll have to pull that out tonight.

I'm finding since I'm using my ipod and itunes more than anything else these days, box sets have made a comeback in my listening habits. Just load what I want on the ipod and listen away. ipods are just a music-lovers godsend imho. it makes all these box sets I have something I now can listen to regularly. :tup

Not only that, you can reorganize the box set any way you want! I've re-ordered a number of Mosaic sets back into LP order in just seconds.

I agree, the iPod is a godsend, even more for music lovers with little kids and a small townhouse where the TV/DVD and stereo are in the same room.

I've also got the complete Larry Young playlist all done. I left out the Fuel stuff, which I don't care for much, and I'm missing the track with Lenny White (and I could use a less scratchy copy of the Buddy Terry LP...)

I'm in the same boat -- my box-set allergy went down a lot since I started listening to music via iPod.

I don't have an iPod, but I listen to box sets often enough. But not to this one often enough. . . . I need to revisit it. I sort of overdosed on Atlantic Trane about nine or ten years ago, and have only revisited it infrequently since then. I have the box set, I listened to it several times after buying it all the way through, and have mined only a few of the discs every since.

It's an excellent box set in cd incarnation, and I actually prefer this material chronologically for some reason. You're going to have a lot of fun with it Mike!

I agree with that... hearing the sessions from October 1960 in order (instead of scattered across three separate albums) is quite fascinating.

But the whole box is essential; truly classic music and nicely packaged (although I would presume the Deluxe editions are better sonically).

Not sure about the title though.

The comments by Kalo on the Dolphy "Prestige" box pretty much go along with my thoughts. Plus, the inclusion of the Eddie Davis session on there - where Dolphy is anonymously buried in the section - sort-of began my re-thinking the whole "comple" business.

But the material on "Heavyweight" (and the Dolphy) is essential, in whatever form you choose.

The "Atlantic" Trane has always been my favorite. I could see why you O.D'd on this stuff Lon. I've been loving it for years, but this is my second stint of almost nothing but Atlantic-era Trane for several months in the last 5 years. Haven't O.D'd though :D . Something about this whole era that's captivating. He's still playing changes here (Giant Steps), but then is dipping his toe modally (Favorite Things). Also, that combination of Giant Steps Changes combined with pedal point bass ala Body And Soul or The Night Has A Thousand Eyes...I LOVE that feeling of those two concepts coming together in one song. Whereas later he went more strictly modal compositionally.

Agree with DMP on that - no reason to reproduce sessions with one track/no solo problems. What possible musicological interest could that have? This might be where I diverge from the discographers... also, the fact that I don't need every Shepp record in existence. A lot of 'em stink!

I'm home and pulling out the 'trane box right now.

One of the best things about these forums is that they return me to what I already own at least as much as they make me want to buy new stuff.

I agree that the material on both of these is essential, and these boxes are an economical way to get it. I'm very glad to have the music.

That Eddie Davis session is very good, but totally out of place in the Dolphy box.
