I am back. Thanks for the kind messages in this thread! Weizen*, please post a pic of your SR-71 shirt - have you read the SR-71 flight manual already? It can be found here: http://www.sr-71.org/blackbird/manual/

* faking interest in the SR-71? You must be kidding!

 You'll have to buy me a beer at the Gösser Bierklinik before I let you touch it.

In case anybody wants to join us: Saturday, April 8, 2006, at the Blue Tomato. :)

To further water your mouths, the liner notes from their latest CD - hope I can buy a copy from them.

FLIP PHILIPP - ED PARTYKA DETECT

Liner Notes zur CD "Something Wrong With You":

The "small big band" has been an important part of the development of jazz since Miles got his

"Birth Of The Cool" nonet together in 1948. Usually between nine and eleven players, it offers the arranger enough colour and texture to work with without the heaviness of a full big band.

When we started this project we went back and looked at not just Birth of the Cool, but also the Thelonious Monk Orchestra, Teddy Charles Tentet, Lee Konitz Nonet and the medium sized bands from Gil Evans and Marty Paich. To this illustrious history we´ve added our own particular enunciation and flavour, creating a sound that is (hopefully) easily identifiable in a jazz-historical context but also offers a few surprises along the way. (Ed Partyka)

Music must play a moral role in our soul deadened society of fast food and mass media "entertainment". It is becoming increasingly difficult in this day and age to fight off sensual stagnation and this music is an attempt to stem the tide - one small drop in the bucket.

I have found that knowing the tradition is the best avenue to new ideas and have been inspired by

Ives, Bartok, Webern, Bach Coltrane and Monk. For me there is no conflict between classical and

jazz and likewise between old and new - it is all one continuously flowing musical stream.

I´ve also tried to stay away from institutions and people that deaden the soul and suck the senuality

out of life. I prefer to learn and explore on my own and use real life experience as the basis

of my education. (Flip Philipp)

TRACKS:

1) Put Me On The F***ing Radio

2) Never Go To Bed On An Empty Stomach

3) Bad Follows Good

4) Waiting For Nellie

5) Women & Work

6) Honolulu Lilly

7) Singing In The Bathtub

8) Muse

9) Commercial Intro

10) Strictly Commercial

Honolulu Lilly is a melting pot of melodies, rhythms and shifting meters which eventually

"melts down" into some freaky freeness.

Women & Work was inspired by "When the Saints" I took the New Orleans feel and Klaus

did some wonderful orchestrating, including writing for our three bass clarinet players.

Muse was inspired by a Jimi Hendrix song and has alot of unison lines distributed through the

brass and woodwind sections, giving the whole thing a disjointed feel.

Singing in the Bathtub is a bossa-nova inspired by a Charlie Parker solo lick from a tune I´ve

long since forgotten.

Waiting For Nellie turned out to be my favorite tune on the CD with a wonderfully dark mood

created by Ed´s arrangement and bass trombone.

Never Go To Bed On An Empty Stomach is something my grandmother always said to me.

It is a medum swing complicated through a slightly uncomfortable seven bar form.

The shout chorus is actually a transcribed vibraphone solo I played at a gig with my quintet last year. Put Me On The F..ing Radio is a dream of mine. If I´m every going to get radio airplay I´ll have to change my whole concept and outlook! Mmhhh

Strictly Commercial comes conceptually from the same place as "Radio" and is taken a step further away from commercial music with Ed´s free intro and Clemen´s rocking bass clarinet.

Bad Follows Good is a pentatonic melody shifting between five and four and a nicely pessimistic

way to end this CD. Just remember: Things can always get worse!

been there, done that...

Stunning image by Guy Le Querrec! A classic!

Oh yes! I've known this photo for years, but only last week I found the Sclavis disc in a sale - terrific one! And nice to see it was left as short as it came out originally - no need for all those lengthy releases!

Um, no such luck for you, amigo. You'll only be permitted to touch my ceramic caps. :P

Has anyone of you ever used those caps (except for opening)?

yes. There are interesting bets to be won where you have to hit the thing just right with your index finger to crack the smaller piece off without blood squirting from your finger. Plus these caps come in handy if you are drinking beer during heavy rainfall.

This sounds rather bovine to me... -_-

Nice nipple shirt, weizen. You wrote that your uncle flew the SR-71 - was he a pilot AND engineer (if I remember correctly you said that he was on the design team)?

Yes, a member of 'Kelly' Johnson's design team and the Reconnaissance System Officer (RSO) on a

Jan. '68 run. Not a pilot. Can you imagine the thrill? http://www.wvi.com/~sr71webmaster/Supp_BBook.htm

No idea if RC was at the concert - was hard to get into the audience part from the stage at this theater, and I have no idea what he looks like - but Mr. Bassman and myself will be at the Blue Tomato tonight.

Sorry ubu - we lost so much money on this gig on additional train tickets due to some visa problems with the Turkish members of the group - wrong information from some official embassy people (!) - that another train ticket is not in the budget ;)

Off to Viennese coffeehouses!

Okay, I can assure you rockefeller center is alive and kicking in Vienna, he just reduced his board activities due to some new job he's preparing for. Wish him success! He was already at the club with his girlfriend when Mr. Bassman and myself arrived. The meeting was verrrry nice, the band was great, verrrrry entertaining, witty moderations by bass trombonist Ed Partyka, who did a hilarious WASP preacher parody vocal in one number. Great compositions by doorbellist Flip Philipp, arranged mostly by Partyka, excellentb band with a stunning original 20 year old alto saxist in the reed section - all three doubling on bass clarinet, making it the only small big band with three of these axes and a vibes-bass-drums rhythm section. These guys swung, we had a great time - the best jazz gig I heard in years! The club is nice and recommended for Vienna visitors - but from May to September there are no concerts as they concentrate on their beautiful biergarten.

Sorry no photos to document this inofficial organissimo members summit, and no reports on the rant about various forum members :g

Thanks to mikeweil and mr. bassman for the very enjoyable meeting. The poor guys had to stay up late on two consecutive nights - their endurance is impressive (their patience, too)! The music was great in spite of - according to the band leader - not being well rehearsed. I'm looking forward to attending this band's next concerts. ubu, I hope you can make it to Basel this weekend.

P.S. mikeweil can speak Viennese slang. A Wahnsinn.

Huh? You'll be in Basel, too? I'm not sure... and I cannot speak Viennese slang, either. -_-

Skip the Basel gig, too: It's one of those 45 minute gigs on a kurdish festival, and it's in Liestal, not in Basel, I was told last night.

Thanks for the info Mike! Liestal is not exactly a very nice place, I think, and to go there for such a short gig would not make much sense for me. But keep me posted about future "real" gigs!
