Shawn's metal recommendations never let me down... jammin' to Spirit Caravan right now, in fact! :tup:cool:

That's cool! I'm in a state of pure fanboy adoration of anything that Scott "Wino" Weinrich is involved in. Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, Place Of Skulls, The Hidden Hand, etc. The guy should be up there with Lemmy in "underground metal God status".

Hell, I recently described him as a "heavy metal soul singer"...

One I downloaded awhile back that I seem to keep returning to is by a pianist named Bennick. The album is Home Safely. Piano trio. Kind of Bill Evans-ish.

Up over and out.

Well I'm shocked. The Bennick I referred to above is actually Bennink as in Han Bennink. I thought he was on the absolute fringes of the jazz universe along with guys like Dave Burrell and Peter Brotzman, but this is fine and mellow stuff. Jazz never ceases to amaze.

That's some of my favorite music these days, Dave: typically outside players playing in. Dave Burrell has a few albums that you might actually like. Also check out Marion Brown's "Back to Paris." It's about as accessible as he gets.

Not emusic, but I just discovered you can get the complete RCA/Victor recordings of Louis Armstrong for $9.99 at Amazon's mp3 store. Posting it here, because I know emusic thread folk are fine with the downloads.

Well...to add to the Black Saint/Soul Note feast, a vast swathe of ECMs just landed on e-music UK.

They put some up in Aug but then removed most of them. Some more appeared in September but since then nothing.

Today the number of albums jumped to 162!!!!!!

Though I'd love to know how they are labelling them - rather than attributing them to the leader they seem to be randomly named after one player on the disc. Jack de Johnettes New Directions is by Eddie Gomez it would seem! Not a major issue but makes finding them a bit harder.

How about Jarrett's 'Sun Bear' concerts in 13 downloads!!!!!! I recall when this was an unattainable luxury because of cost in the late 70s!

Yeah, yeah, Bev, rub it in.

I'm sure it will come your way soon!

E-music must solve many of the distribution issues ECM (and other European labels) have had in getting their product out in the USA.

Edit: looks like the entire catalogue currently on CD is going up - another wave today pushing to 325 albums.

more of the recent Black Saint/ Soul Note goodness:

George Adams with Don Pullen Quartet - Live at the Village Vanguard Vol 1 @ Vol 2.

George Lewis - Homage To Charlie Parker

Billy Harper - In Europe (great!, Fred Hersch?? no way!)

Andrew Hill - Strange Serenade (amazing!!, if you love Andrew Hill highly recommend!)

Walt Dickerson - Life Rays

The Herbie Nichols Project - Love Is Proximity (good stuff)

other

Charlie Hunter - Baboon Strength (nice organ trio set, the 2nd half smokes!)

The Fireman (Paul McCartney) - Electric Arguments (surprising really really good, a mix of everything, his most creative album since his first solo record)

Buddy Miller - The Best Of The Hightone Years (at least the tracks I didn't have off his last record for Hightone, he is kind of the Alt Country version of Richard Thompson, sure he is known but should be a household name, great comp, for the Richard Thompson heads at least download the cover of Keep Your Distance)

Wow, all of these are of great interest. Had that George Lewis on the "to get" for a long time.

Just went to scope it out. of course they have both George Lewis's mixed together (album-wise) but the description is all the clarinet player who died in 1968, not the trombone & electronics master still going strong.

Maybe Manfred and e-music decided that, with all the grumbling over the years about ECMs being not-jazz, soulless etc etc, there's no real market in the US for these!

One of those smileys spelling out the fact that this is not meant to be taken as a serious comment!

I'm listening now to Sapporo, November 18, 1976, Part 1. Simply beautiful, stunning improvised music.

I dropped down to the 30 downloads a month. I wasn't getting to everything I was downloading and I kind of wan't to just use Emusic for stuff that isn't easy to find on Vinyl or CD. This month is more Black Saint/Soul Note goodness and some Walt.

Roswell Rudd, Steve Lacy - Regerneration

Paul Motian Quintet – Jack Of Clubs

Paul Motian Quintet – Misterioso

Walt Dickerson - A Sense Of Direction

A reissue I had been hoping for slipped out on me a couple years ago due to a new title, but I was mainly looking for one track, so I caught up. 4 of Charles Earland - Charles II's seven tracks were reissued on Funk Fantastique, including my much wanted Auburn Delight featuring Joe Lee Wilson. Supplemented it with Black Saint's by Bill DIxon, Julius Hemphill and Bakida Carroll, then returned here and DUHHHHH - ran myself out of DLs without grabbing Organissimo!!! A booster pack is under consideration.
