the more I listen to this, the more I am struck but how many different guitar tones Scofield is using on this cd.

And yes Jack and Larry are fantastic with some great solos by each.

My only complaint with Jack is that he needs to brush up on Miles's discographry before making announcements.

By the way,

I am wonderiing why the tune "IF" is on this cd since it is a Tony Williams tribute. I see no apparent connection to Tony Williams.

The two recordings I have of this tune, from Joe Henderson's "The Kicker" and Larry Young's "Unity" - neither of those recordings had Tony on drums.

here's what i don't understand about the Sco whining on this thread:

this music is so large: so large in terms its message, so large in terms of the historic thirst it helps to quench, so large in terms of how hard these veteran masters are pushing each other to the absolute limits ...

so large, that one requisite for success on this type of project is having someone with a near endless reservoir of ideas.

percussive ideas, yes, JackD is all over it ... jaw dropping. but its never been in the cards that listeners who seriously relate to transcendental musics will be captivated over hours without the presence of a player who posseses a vast reservoir of melodic/harmonic ideas. to sustain its healing, the mind demands ever more variety in helping it to recover the inner universe of understanding upon which we architect our lives but which becomes so badly tarnished and damaged as to be unrecognizable during much of the time we struggle.

and transcendental thought most directly related to shifting melodic and harmonic landscapes.

there just aren't that many improvisational masters out there with the depth of ideas and the sorcery to weave them together in changing forms to pull this off. taking nothing away from Goldings, who is among my favorites , but Sco is an *ocean* of ideas, most of them original (or at least morphed and reworked to the point that it doesn't matter if their origin can be traced). you simply can't have this band without someone like Sco on board. and i'd have to guess that Goldings would agree that he's not there yet.

and i'd have to guess that JackD chose Sco for this band because there are precious few others who could pull it off. i'm struggling to count up enough possibilities to fill one hand.

yep, I think using that as a riff base for the tune was intended. But does anyone think the title "Saudades" is odd? considering in the liner notes, its said that is the European touring agency that helped bring Jack, Sco and Larry together, the Yellowjackets thank the same touring agency on their new album "25" as well.

Not exactly sure what you mean about this title cj? and what is your point about the relation to the manager are you saying that Saudades is the name of the agency?

I know this a portuguese word which means "sadness/longing" something like that. I thought it might refer to the loss of Tony - but the nature of the tune which is very rocky/bouncy certainly does not reflect the name for it, if that is what you meant.

Here's the other big mystery.

Why am I responding so well to the Saudades cd, when I have never reponded well to "Emergency" and the other Tony Williams Lifetime cds that inspired it?

Anyone else in the same boat?

I'm in the same boat. I don't dislike the Tony Williams stuff, but it never really reached me either.

This CD, however, is really something. Might be my favorite new release this year so far, along with the Andrew Hill.

For me, this trio seems much more "traditional"(probably not the right word) than what Tony Williams/Larry Young/John M. were doing. Goldings is definatley keeping it more grounded. There's more of a groove here than what Lifetime was going for. This band was inspired by Lifetime, but is up to something completely different. I really like Goldings on this, and Jack D. is just so killing it.

maybe having more earthbound and commercial players like goldings and scofield in for their more forward thinking and creative counterparts (young and mclaughlin) contributes to why people enjoy this disc more. it is less challenging, more easy listening music. there is no reason not to like it but perhaps the time would be better spent trying to get into the original lifetime music if it is not reaching you. because that was some great forward thinking challenging stuff. (well turn it over is a bit too much for me but i can respect it)

though what if tony williams lifetime recorded for ECM? what would that have sounded like?

it makes me sad that people can't get into/appreciate "emergency" but can then appreciate the ECM/commercial-ized imitation that comes out 37? years later.....

chuck, i agree if we are talking emergency era williams and young...

but then i remember williams did make "million dollar legs" and i still enjoy young's "spaceball".

more traditional huh? I thought this set brings and certain forward push with Larry and Jack which makes the more out moments really work well. And of course Jack is the usual master of implied time. I was playing "Seven Steps to Heaven" for a friend from this and I asked him to pick out 2 and 4, he couldn't do it. I met my friend when I was a TA in the jazz course.
