Fake mini-LPs

IMPORTANT NOTE: The mini-lp market is being infiltrated by counterfeit mini-lp CDs made in Russia. These fakes, especially when still sealed, are almost impossible to tell unless one knows what the genuine Japan original looks like or has one for comparison. Buyers at Disk Union have been fooled! The list of musical artists that have been counterfeited includes: King Crimson (21st Century UICE), Rainbow (POCP), Led Zeppelin (AMCY), Eric Clapton (UICY), Genesis (VJCP 1st edition w/ Virgin logo on Obi), King Crimson (IECP), Jethro Tull (TOCP), Deep Purple (WPCR-1563-1577), Black Sabbath (Victor), Creedence Clearwater Revival (VICP), Jimi Hendrix (UICY). So, BUYERS BEWARE! Purchase items only from dealers who can be trusted to sell only genuine Japan mini-lp CDs. Purchasing “Japan” mini-LP CDs from Russia, Finland, Byelorus, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Hong Kong, and China is risky. There are also dealers in the USA, UK, and Canada that are selling fakes. If the price of a mini-lp seems too good to be true, then it may well be a counterfeit.

Yes, there was some discussion about this over at Steve Hoffman forums (Classifieds Forum).....w/Black Sabbath, etc. I have yet to hear of any fake jazz stuff surfacing.....have you?

The only professionally made counterfeit jazz CDs I've seen so far on Ebay were some russia-made ECM albums. Garbarek, Metheny, Jarrett, etc

Ahh, so this must be the guy who's out there leading the counter-attack? Clever way to go about it.

  • 3 years later...

Other than business/financial concerns, if these are straight digital copies w/comparable-quality packaging, does the consumer get cheated in terms of product quality when inadvertently buying something like this?

Only the record companies. Maybe the artists. But the bands that are being pirated seem one to whom a few quid one way or another wouldn't make much difference.

I have yet to ever bid on a mini-LP on eBay but while looking it I came across a site about mini lps. Near the top of the page there's a link to screen for trusted eBay sellers of them. And gee, you'll notice their prices are higher than those that aren't trusted.

Well, a fake could make your stereo explode...

I think the choice is: Do you want to enrich a capitalist or a Chinese Tong/Russian mafioso?

You mean to tell me that organized crime is not a form of capitalism?

Not me.

Probably that very same chinese or russian mafioso is the president of a 'legal' company that are manufacturing the very same 'legit' issue for entertainment corporations in a lager style factory located the suburbs of Shanghai or Moscow, with workers in semi-slavery and without any respect for enviromental issues. In the fashion business, 'Made in Italy' included, it goes like this. Most of the stuff from Dolce e Gabbana, Prada or Armani, just to name a few, are manufactured in this way, only the latest process is done in Italy, so it has the 'Made In Italy' certification. So when you buy an Armani suit at 3000 bucks you should know that was made in China, it costed 80 bucks to Armani, and the italian factory will add the labels and the buttons.

But, hey, you got an Armani!

Hmmm,a non-mini lp that says "Tronto"....wonder if this one is a counterfeit (eBay seller in China)? Anyone here own this particular edition (VICJ-60023)?

"Tronto"! Tee hee... We residents know it's "Tronna".

Spell it how you like , but if you mean to refer to the actual recording location for this album , you better pronounce it , "Vancouver" :)
