ghost of miles Posted August 4, 2003 Report Posted August 4, 2003 Don't know how I missed these, or if they've been mentioned elsewhere... from Alan's upcoming page: Duke Ellington - Ellington Uptown (Columbia/Legacy) Oct 14 — from 1953; plus "The Liberian Suite" from 1947 Duke Ellington - Masterpieces By Ellington (Columbia/Legacy) Oct 14 — includes three bonus tracks; from 1950 Duke Ellington - Festival Session (Columbia/Legacy) Oct 14 — includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks; from 1959 Cool that they're including "The Liberian Suite" with UPTOWN! Chuck Nessa Posted August 5, 2003 Report Posted August 5, 2003 Does it have both Harlem and the Controversial Suite? Quote
BruceH Posted August 5, 2003 Report Posted August 5, 2003 I hope they don't mix up alternate takes with masters this time! Quote
JSngry Posted August 5, 2003 Report Posted August 5, 2003 MASTERPIECES BY ELLINGTON is a severely overlooked masterwork in my opinion. Not really like anything else Duke's recorded - long, REALLY long arrangements of 3 "old favorites" (plus "The Tatooed Bride"), arrangements that go off pretty far into leftfield in pursuing their flights of fantasy, and, by virtue of being Sonny Greer's last recording w/the band (I think), the end of an era. You can look at this album as a summation of everything Duke had accomplished up to that point, laid out in full 33 1/3 RPM spendor. Things would soon change. Quote
Guest mary mcgoon Posted August 5, 2003 Report Posted August 5, 2003 I agree- Masterpieces is a great album, an early attempt to try to do someting special with the LP format. Each tune runs about 15 minutes. I do think some of the Ellington "standards" are a little episodic, almost pasted together chorus by chorus, but there are too many wonderful moments to worry much about it. Does anyone know what the bonus tracks are going to be? The Tattooed Bride alone is worth the price of the CD- a strong candidate for Ellington's best longer piece. Quote
Roundsound Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 I have the masterpiece session and it is very good. If memory serves me write, the Strayhorn biog indicates that Strayhorn had a big hand in the arrangements of this session. Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 6, 2003 Author Report Posted August 6, 2003 Does it have both Harlem and the Controversial Suite? I'm guessing yes, as these are both included on the Japanese cut-out of HI-FI UPTOWN that I picked up several years ago. As for MASTERPIECES, I'm wondering if several tracks from the 10-inch ELLINGTON MOODS (or MOOD ELLINGTON, can't remember the exact title) might be included--"The Clothed Woman," for starters, is one I'd love to see included. jpmosu Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 (edited) This is great news, but weren't *Blues in Orbit* and *A Drum is a Woman* to be reissued, too? john Edited August 16, 2003 by jpmosu Quote
mikeweil Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Gonna get me the Masterpieces Cd, as this is missing from the French CBS LP box I have with the Ellington Columbia 1950s sessions - they had reissued it separately. Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 6, 2003 Author Report Posted August 6, 2003 This is great news, but wasn't *Blues in Orbit* and *A Drum is a Woman* to be reissued, too? john They've been on tap for some time. In fact, I heard that Phil Schaap played one of these in a newly-remastered form a year or two ago on the radio in New York. Evidently Sony's decided to bring these other titles out first instead. I'm just glad that they're finally starting to do more with the 1947-52 period; now, bring on 1927-40! Quote
jazzbo Posted August 6, 2003 Report Posted August 6, 2003 Poor A Drum is a Woman! Listed as a release in a card in the 1999 reissues! But never appeared domestically on cd. . . I'm waitin'. I have the Masterpieces as the fifth cd in the CBS France cd reissue of the 1947 to 1952 material, and it also has the Liberian Suite on that cd, a very good cd to have. But I'll be buying these new ones, that's certain. Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 6, 2003 Author Report Posted August 6, 2003 A later Columbia Duke that I happily came across recently is PIANO IN THE FOREGROUND. It's one of my favorite Duke piano records, along with the Capitol date and MONEY JUNGLE. Quote
BERIGAN Posted August 8, 2003 Report Posted August 8, 2003 Does it have both Harlem and the Controversial Suite? I'm guessing yes, as these are both included on the Japanese cut-out of HI-FI UPTOWN that I picked up several years ago. Got the cd in the Borders bargain bin I bet.....I hope the cd sounds better than the Japanese and domestic cds sounded...brass sounded tinny, but the drums...oh the drums... Quote
jazzbo Posted August 8, 2003 Report Posted August 8, 2003 Yeah David, Piano in the Foreground, a fantastic record. THAT would make an excellent expanded reissue! Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 8, 2003 Author Report Posted August 8, 2003 (edited) Got the cd in the Borders bargain bin I bet..... I know noo-thing... noo-thing!! It's the Japanese issue. We used to get a lot of cut-out imports, as I'm sure you well know. You're right about the sound. A new Sony re-issue could only improve it (one hopes). Edited August 8, 2003 by ghost of miles Quote
alankin Posted August 9, 2003 Report Posted August 9, 2003 Does it have both Harlem and the Controversial Suite? Yes, the Ellington Uptown reissue will have both of these. Quote
alankin Posted August 9, 2003 Report Posted August 9, 2003 (edited) As for MASTERPIECES, I'm wondering if several tracks from the 10-inch ELLINGTON MOODS (or MOOD ELLINGTON, can't remember the exact title) might be included--"The Clothed Woman," for starters, is one I'd love to see included. The four main tracks on "Masterpieces" were recorded on 12/19/1950. The bonus tracks on "Masterpieces" will be "Vagabonds," "Smada" and "Rock-Skippin' at the Blue Note." "Vagabonds" was recorded on 12/11/51 and was originally issued on a Franklin Mint collection. The other two bonus tracks were recorded on 8/8/51 and were first issued as singles. jazzbo Posted August 9, 2003 Report Posted August 9, 2003 Well, those are great additions! I had hoped that Columbia would duplicate the French five cd series in new remastering, but that seems out the window now. . . . Quote
Matthew Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 I assume these have been delayed? Anyone know when the street date is now, I'm want these now!! Quote
jazzbo Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 I have advance copies of the Masterpieces, Festival Suite and Uptown. . . they're going to be fantastic releases. . . . I don't know when they are slated for reissue, would love to know! Quote
montg Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 From Alan's site: Duke Ellington - Ellington Uptown (Columbia/Legacy) Feb 17 — from 1953; plus "The Liberian Suite" from 1947 Duke Ellington - Masterpieces By Ellington (Columbia/Legacy) Feb 17 — includes three bonus tracks; from 1950 Duke Ellington - Festival Session (Columbia/Legacy) Feb 17 — includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks; from 1959 Quote
Matthew Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 Thanks montg. That means a three month wait! Well, it's not like there's is nothing else by the Duke that is out there worth buying. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted November 29, 2003 Report Posted November 29, 2003 Damn it!!! Sorry; I want Blues in Orbit, and I want it NOW!!!! Quote
