Matthew Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Well, the jazz-gods did smile upon me after all. Received word the Coltrane box is shipping today. Quote
tranemonk Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 (edited) I have to say... I wonder why they didn't include the Wes Montgomery or Sonny Rollins sets in this sale? Edited August 24, 2006 by tranemonk Quote
trane_fanatic Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 I have to say... I wonder why they didn't include the Wes Montgomery or Sonny Rollins sets in this sale? Or the Miles or Dolphy or Pepper or a buncha other ones... Round 2 maybe? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 (edited) Just relax and wait. Pretty easy to say: If you like them so much, why don't you have 'em? Edited August 24, 2006 by Chuck Nessa Quote
GregK Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 I will be buying the Dolphy set eventually Quote
Matthew Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 Pretty easy to say: If you like them so much, why don't you have 'em? Because I'm too damn cheap! Quote
JSngry Posted August 24, 2006 Author Report Posted August 24, 2006 If it wasn't in the sale, it's still in print, right? Quote
Matthew Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 I could swear I read some where the the Montgomery set is OOP. At the very least, I think Concord might not order aonther pressing of the big box sets while they take stock of what they want to do in the future. Quote

I remember reading the same thing somewhere recently that the Montgomery set was going OOP, but I don't remember where or when. But it did get me off the fence and I purchased the Montgomery set recently. I had picked up the Rollins Prestige set from yourmusic when they still had it. And I also picked up the Pepper Galaxy box recently. In case these disappear, I didn't want to be shut out. But who knows what the plan is for these box sets right now. Quote
tranemonk Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 (edited) Got a confirmation email on my final order placed on 8/3 which had about 6 cds..... no word about my 2nd "trane order.... Just called them to check.... He said I was one of the last 'Trane orders they might be able to fill. He was going to call the warehouse and let me know either way today... Hey Ron did you get yours??? Any other board members who actually did miss out? Check back in a few hours and I'll let you know if I've got an extra one for sale.... Edited August 24, 2006 by tranemonk Quote
Soulstation1 Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 i'd think the coltrane color booklet would cost around $ 20 or more to produce.. Quote

Reading through the posts, I think I am the latest to order and receive a Coltrane box. My order was placed 7/30. I think most if not all of the people itching for one got one. Quote
mikelz777 Posted August 25, 2006 Report Posted August 25, 2006 Actually the sound on the Evans really bugged me... which is why I got rid of it 6 months ago... (Also NO Booklet??? ) Ya know, for a set that came out in '91, the sound quality of this s--- sounds damn MF good. Ditto for the Evans box. To my ears, early '90's Fantasy CDs generally sound pretty damn great. Are the individual recordings about the same, better or worse than those on the box set? Since they ran out of Evans Complete Riverside before they got to my order, I'm giving strong thought to buying up the individual recordings included in the box. I won't be able to do it for what I would have paid for it in the blowout sale, but I can do it for considerably less than what the set is selling for in various places on the internet. I guess I probably shouldn't be too concerned. I never seem to notice or be bothered by the sound quality of any recordings some seem to find fault in. Maybe my stereo and ears aren't as high end as others. Quote

tranemonk Posted August 25, 2006 Report Posted August 25, 2006 Just heard back from our boy Jackson... He said I got one of the last 'Trane sets (ordered 7/27)... Just got the FedEx tracking email.... So I'm assuming everyone here who wanted one... did get one...., right? I will say this.. despite their complete disorganization... a) They probably made a shitload of $$$ of this sale... and b) Jackson seemed to be the only dude there who knew what was going on... I did hear that rumor that the Wes was OOP.... but I'm going to hope there is a Round 2 with that set... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 25, 2006 Report Posted August 25, 2006 They probably made a shitload of $$$ of this sale They generated a shitload of money but that is something different. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted August 25, 2006 Report Posted August 25, 2006 Saw some SOB on another board bragging about getting a 2nd copy to sell to the "losers". Quote
DukeCity Posted August 25, 2006 Report Posted August 25, 2006 I placed a big order on 7/24 and received a box of 37 discs yesterday. I placed an order for the Coltrane box on 7/30 and haven't heard anything since they first acknowledged my order. Sounds like I may have been too late... Quote
Stefan Wood Posted August 25, 2006 Report Posted August 25, 2006 (edited) You've seen this on the Concord music group site? 6 cd Coltrane box set coming out in September? Edited August 25, 2006 by Stefan Wood Quote
Matthew Posted August 25, 2006 Report Posted August 25, 2006 You've seen this on the Concord music group site? 6 cd Coltrane box set coming out in September? From the track listing for Fearless Leader on the site, it seems as if the cds are in chronological order, not lp order. Which, for Coltrane during these years, is the way to go. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 25, 2006 Report Posted August 25, 2006 Looks like a good set . . . original art and liners. . . probably going to sound great. . . less than fifty bucks preorder at cduniverse. . . . MUST RESIST! Quote

Despite what others on the board say, the sonics on the Evans box are fine to me (similar to other early 90s Fantasy CD reissues) and not "terrible". However, I am not an audiophile, so don't listen to my opinion. Edited August 25, 2006 by trane_fanatic Quote
chris olivarez Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 My Evans box has arrived-YEEHAW!!!!! I don't claim to be an auiophile either and if it doesn't sound like it was recorded in a shoebox I'm going to call it good!!! Quote
