brownie Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 More than you want to know: Liberty Records Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted August 14, 2006 Author Report Posted August 14, 2006 too bad it was 24.99 the strings were recorded very well the mix was amazing Quote
JSngry Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 If you can find the Steve White Liberty side w/just the cover and not the record, buy it. Lousy record (well, "lousy" is a bit much. Let's call it boring instead), but truly bizarre cover! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 (edited) From an eBay auction... The AMG reviews closes with... This record features one of the more elaborate and aestheticly pleasing album covers of it's day, an excellent, carnival-esque painting by Ed Graves. Edited August 14, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote
brownie Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 The Liberty jazz albums had some of the weirdest covers! The 'Unpredictable' Steve White cover is a good example. In a similar vein was the cover to the Jimmy Rowles Trio date 'Rare - But Well Done' by Gloria Cortella. The music on that one is better than on the Steve White (White's Nocturne dates were much better, weird too!)! Some other Liberty jazz albums: 6001 - Jazz in Hollywood (Jazz All Stars) 6002 - Dom Frontiere Sextet 6003 - Herbie Harper/Bud Shank/Bob Gordon 6004 - Abe Most (Mr. Clarinet) 6005 - Hollywood Saxophone Quartet 6006 - Jack Millman (Shades of Jazz To Come) 6008 - Bob Enevoldsen (Smorgsabord) 6009 - Buddy Childers (Sam Songs) 6012 - Red Norvo (Vibe-Rations) Quote
Chas Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 (edited) If you can find the Steve White Liberty side w/just the cover and not the record, buy it. Lousy record (well, "lousy" is a bit much. Let's call it boring instead), but truly bizarre cover! I concur . Instrumentally , White is dull . Another example of a guy who was not his own man , who was not playing himself . White took Prez and Getz and added.........nothing . Nat Hentoff's 2 1/2 star review of the Liberty side was partly based on this same criticism , however Nat went on to say , " His decision to vocalize is extremely ill-advised for just about every reason in the book " . This strikes me as unfairly censorious . Whether one appreciates White's pixilated singing or not ( and those who dig Dorough , Allison or Frishberg might ) , whatever originality White possessed was in this aspect of his musical personality . The decision to experiment is never ill-advised regardless of what we think of the results . The Liberty jazz albums had some of the weirdest covers! The 'Unpredictable' Steve White cover is a good example. In a similar vein was the cover to the Jimmy Rowles Trio date 'Rare - But Well Done' by Gloria Cortella. EDIT: Fixed broken image links . Chuck Nessa Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 Your "one time announcement" showed up twice in your post. Is that a reflection of your veracity? Quote
Chas Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 Your "one time announcement" showed up twice in your post. Is that a reflection of your veracity? Chuck I'm not sure what you're talking about . Did the image-hosting service I use put an ad in place of my image ? I'm not seeing any ads . If this is the case I will use another service . Why so quick to question my veracity ?? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 First time I looked there were no images (just a red x in a box) but two pitches for a download service. Quote
jlhoots Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 The images are there, BUT so is an "ad" for File Lodge. Quote
couw Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 it seems the ad is put in place of a pic. I had to go through some moves to make all four cover pics show. This service obviously does not allow remote linking. Chuck is just being grumpy. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted August 16, 2006 Author Report Posted August 16, 2006 THIS POST IS AWESOME! BROWNIE: GOOD TITLES U MENTION:> THATS WHAT CHEWY WAS AIMING FOR. GOOD COVERS: I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT THE WEIRD LIBERTY COVERS! THOSE ARE PRETTY WEIRD!! Quote
brownie Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 ...and another Red Norvo Liberty (never saw or heard that one!) Quote
JSngry Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 I've got that one. Pretty disappointing, actually. Safe, prefab, and bland. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 28, 2008 Author Report Posted December 28, 2008 omg i really started this same thread two years ago? ever since my car accident my mind is really playing tricks on me, im sorry Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 Martin Denny trumps all in this category. California is the midwest compared to Hawaii. If you get any further west than Hawaii, you're in the far east. Quote
medjuck Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 More than you want to know: Liberty Records Well maybe not more than we want to know. Didn't Liberty buy Blue Note around '65? That's why EMI now owns BN. I don't think this article even mentions Blue Note. Quote
