Guy Berger Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 Somebody posted on AAJ that Pip Pyle, drummer for several prog rock bands (National Health, Hatfield & the North), passed away last night. RIP. Guy Quote
GA Russell Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 My word, I'm sorry. I had quite a number of his records in the 70s. In those years I spent more time listening to Canterbury prog rock than to jazz, and he was a very major player. RIP Quote
7/4 Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 I'm confirming this, I made a phone call to a friend who knows those folks. A bit too early, only 57 or so. Quote
GA Russell Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 As I recall, and I'm not 100% sure of this, but I think he was also an early member of Gong, on the Camembert Electrique album. Quote
B. Clugston Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 Here's an obit: http://calyx.club.fr/mus/pyle_pip.html Pip Pyle played with Gong in 1971 plus some later incarnations in the 1990s. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 played wit soft heap. a good group of british musicians. h-ugh e-elton a-alan p-pip. however the good live album on ogun has someone filling in for pyle (soft head with d-david sheen)! Quote
GA Russell Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 B. Clugston, thanks for that link to the bio. Very informative. Last night in memoriam I listened to National Health's Playtime CD on Cuneiform. It was a 1979 concert not released till 2001, with Alan Gowen, John Greaves, Phil Miller, Pyle and a fellow I don't know named Alain Eckert. Within the past two weeks we have learned of the deaths of Moacir Santos, Maynard Ferguson and now Pip Pyle. I'm a bit stunned. Quote
sidewinder Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 Really sorry to hear this. First Elton Dean, then in a matter of weeks, Pip Pyle. Just happened to be playing an 'In Cahoots' CD in the car only the other day and really enjoying it too. Much too young - may he rest in peace. Quote
david weiss Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 (edited) A shame, great drummer. Heard him just a couple of months ago here in New York with Hatfield and the North. The band was great and Pip looked fine. You never know I guess. Edited August 31, 2006 by david weiss Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Damn! This is really sad news - I am a big fan of Gong and really enjoyed the National Health records. Saw him with Gong on a reunion tour maybe six or seven years ago, and it was really nice. RIP and thanks for the wonderful music, Pip the Heap (PHP)! Quote
