brownie Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 This was a BN session recorded on the West Coast under the supervision of Leonard Feather. Martin Banks, trumpet, Harold Land, tenor, Amos Trice, piano, Clarence Jones, bass (erroneously listed as playing drums on the original vinyl), Leon Pettis, drums. The session was recorded in LA on October 25, 1960 and left in the vaults until Michael Cuscuna released it in 1980 on th BN Classic rainbow label! Nice session! Quote
Peter Johnson Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 Wasn't this reissued on CD recently? Quote

Michael Cuscuna may have been in charge of the reissues in 1980 when this was released on LP, but I wonder if it wasn't someone else who worked on it. Michael's made it clear enough that he doesn't think this session is "Blue Note material". That's why he let Water reissue it. He didn't want to. It's OK, but I'd certainly grab one of Harold's Contemporary CDs over this one any day. Later, Kevin Quote

The original vinyl I have carries this line in the credits on the back cover: 'Produced for release by Michael Cuscuna' Quote
brownie Posted November 7, 2006 Report Posted November 7, 2006 BN session recorded on the west coast! OooooooooooHhhhh!!! i like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another BN West Coast session from the Lion/Wolff era was the 'Best of the West' December 31, 1954 recordings that came out on two ten-inchers! Musicians included Conte Candoli, Harry Edison, Herb and Lorraine Geller, Budy Collette, Jimmy Giuffre. Leonard Feather also produced this date! The session was included in this Lonehill release: Quote

mikeweil Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 Back to the Land ..... could it be this was intended for release on another label and just issued on Blue Note by Cuscuna as that label or rather the Classics series was the only outlet for jazz vault issues in the Capitol EMI label group at the time? If so, what label could that be? I can see why Cuscuna doesn't view this as a Blue Note session, but so many albums originally released on other (and West Coast) labels have been reissued on Blue Note ..... seems he gets pickier with age. mikeweil Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 If the land was indeed reissued on Water, could someone please post a link to that? Seems I lost my bookmarks for Water .... thanks! Quote
Daniel A Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 It was reissued by Mighty Quinn: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...91840&BAB=E Quote
