Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 Did anyone pay attention to what I had to say? I answered most of your questions? Oh yeah by the way did I pass your test? Quote
JSngry Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 (edited) Ok, here's the real test:Whose version of "Birdland" is your favorite? Why do you think more people don't play the middle section of "Chameleon"?Was Sonny just toying w/Trane on "Tenor Madness" or playing for real?Bonus question:Maynard (as bandleader) - Emarcy/Mercury, Roulette. Mainstream, Columbia (discuss by period if necessary). or other? If you pass, welcome. If not, congratulations, geekdom is not yet upon you. Run while you can! Edited January 7, 2007 by JSngry Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 Haha very funny. Okay 1) I do like the original. But I also like the one played by the group Weather Report. I like the arrangement by Micheal Sweeny. 2) B/c it's boring. And makes the song like a bajillion times longer. Well many people don't like long songs unless they have cool improv. solos. 3) Maybe he was Maybe he wasn't. I don't know. But who cares I LOVE THAT SONG! Bonus: This is a wierd question. I don't know. ;/ Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 By the way I think I've think taken enough bs by most of you who replied to my topics. Quote
JSngry Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Well, you got one out of three right. (#3). The bonus question was an opinion-only thing, and that was definitely an opinion you gave! So, you made a 34, + 10 for the bonus. Final score = 44. Close enough. Oh hell, I'll give you #2 as well. I disagree, but that perception is probably why it's not played more. Can't give you #1, though. Weather Report's was the original. So hey, grading with a bit of leftover holiday generosity, that's a 67, plus 10 = 77. Passing in anybody's book. It's official - you're a geek now. Quote
RDK Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 A 14-year old girl who likes Ellington, Coltrane, Bird, and "Tenor Madness?" Heck, Danielle's already way cooler than half the dudes on the forum! Welcome aboard! Oh, if only I was, uh, thirty years younger... Quote

Guy Berger Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Can't give you #1, though. Weather Report's was the original. I remember reading the transcripts to Ken Burns's Jazz special and seeing an interview with Gary Giddins where he was asked if "Birdland" was jazz and he answered "Is it even music?" One of the stupider comments I've read from the guy. Guy Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 Opps my mistake I thought Birdland was written by some other artist! lol Quote
JSngry Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Now THAT'S straight from the Cave! Have I started something here? Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 (edited) Hey Danielle, to answer your original question, we have a great high-school music and jazz program here in Bloomington (Indiana)--Bloomington North's program, run by a woman named Janis Stockhouse. A very good pianist named Julian Bransby just graduated from there last year & is now studying with Luke Gillespie (great player himself--just heard him again last night) at Indiana University. The IU program, run by David Baker, is renowned and really makes the local jazz scene. So are you into Weather Report? A good friend of mine runs a record store here, and we've talked about how much interest 15-25-year-olds seem to have in that group. (Another thing--most of his customers over 30 buy CDs, and most of his customers under 30 buy vinyl.) In any event, very cool musical taste you have, and I hope you stick around! When I was in high school, I hated jazz, but my best friend loved it. He was a pianist and drummer who went to Berklee for a couple of years and now teaches on the East Coast... eventually he helped me get wise to how great this music is by turning me on to the old 2-LP set of Jazz at Massey Hall. If you like "Salt Peanuts," you should seek that one out (only one of many reasons why you should seek that out!). Edited January 7, 2007 by ghost of miles Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 The middle part to that Herbie Hancock tune we were discussing is the best part. Maybe the reason why so many people don't play the whole tune is because mostly smooth jazz players play it. Quote

Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 Hehe I LOVE you guys. You all are too funny!! Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 Ghost Of Miles. I'm happy to hear that you guys have a great jazz program! I don't hear a whole lot of highschool who are good or well known for jazz like Deer Valley is. I know a lot of schools are very unfortunate because there is lack of funds or simply b/c the kids can't keep interest in it. That's pretty awesome to own a record store! I'm actually into any jazz artist, well b/c jazz is jazz it shouldn't matter who it's by. But yes Weather Report is a good jazz group! I actually didn't know to much about jazz until 7th grade came along, and I just loved it and thought it was absolutely amazing. Oh yeah I also need to add WATERMELON MAN IS LIKE THE BEST FREAKIN SONG TOO! Anyways jazz is usually not appreciated up until one learns how it came about. Then that's when it makes you appreciate music more. Quote
Jazzin'D92 Posted January 8, 2007 Author Report Posted January 8, 2007 Oh shut the hell up already! Damn. Quote
