Eric Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 There is a lot of great music on them. "Heaven" is a little funkier - almost a throwback to his pre-Blue Note days. The opening cut - "The Infant" is as ass-shakeingly funky as anythng Young did. "Of Love" is defintiely heavier than both of these. For some reason, I thought Contrasts was coming out as a RVG or Conn this year. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 25, 2007 Author Report Posted February 25, 2007 hmmm- i wish i had them! are they on jrvg? Quote
jazzbo Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 No. Only cd appearances I'm aware of were on the Larry Young Mosaic. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 I've got "Contrasts" on LP. Used to have "Heaven on earth". Althea Young's singing is perhaps the most awful I've ever heard. She sings on both, but I couldn't ever get rid of "Contrasts" because "Majestic soul" is just totally incredible. MG Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 25, 2007 Author Report Posted February 25, 2007 IF THEY ARE ALREADY REMASTERED FROM THE MOSAIC WOULD IT BREAK THEIR BACKS JUST TO ISSUE SINGLE DISCS OF THIS FOR US Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 IF THEY ARE ALREADY REMASTERED FROM THE MOSAIC WOULD IT BREAK THEIR BACKS JUST TO ISSUE SINGLE DISCS OF THIS FOR US Very likely - because some asshole like me is gonna say, "stay away from those albums because Larry's wife is the most awful singer ever". JSngry Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 Althea is not a good singer by any stretch of the imagination/definition, but I feel her soul anyway, and it touches me in a totally non-musical way. Which is more than I can say about that Tequila chick on the Fuel albums... Quote
Soulstation1 Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 CHWEY YUO ANI'T GOOT A CRD FO TEH LY MOSISC? Quote
Eric Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 (edited) I've got "Contrasts" on LP. Used to have "Heaven on earth". Althea Young's singing is perhaps the most awful I've ever heard. She sings on both, but I couldn't ever get rid of "Contrasts" because "Majestic soul" is just totally incredible. MG I once owned the Mosaic and made burns of these two before I (sadly) had to sell the set. I did however exclude the vocals, so I "know" these albums without them. I listen to these two quite a bit and enjoy them. Edited February 25, 2007 by Eric Quote
sidewinder Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 I've got these two albums on the original Libertys as well as the Mosaic and like 'em both. Don't even mind Althea Young's vocals - worth hearing for the spacey (and very sympathetic) backing from Larry. 'Second MG's comment on 'Majestic Soul' also. These two albums are worthy of reissue. Is that Althea on the cover of 'Heaven On Earth'? Quote
Nate Dorward Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 I did a post on teh board some time ago on these two--I'm sure a search would bring it up. -- They're certainly the weakest of LY's Blue Note discs & the Althea tracks are awful, but they both have their moments, esp. Contrasts. "A Major Affair" is the track I remember as the best (duo with Eddie Gladden), plus a good Tyrone Washington tune. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 Althea isn't outright unlistenable, and the backings are potent enough. I think the best moments on Contrasts are every bit the match of everything Larry led on BN short of Unity. Later Larry, though, is probably best served on Lawrence of Newark--now that one is hard core. Quote
