Read my Rodney Jones web log contribution Keep swinging Durium How can it be 2005??? Kirkland died in 1998. Per the Savant website: "In 1983 four young men got together to record a CD's worth of music they had fermenting inside their imaginations. Young and filled with energy they played like there was no tomorrow. In fact there were to be many tomorrows for these young men and each of them went on to make their mark in the jazz world. Each joined the ranks of the masters of their generation. The present CD, "Dreams and Stories" documents the collaboration of four soon-to-be greats in the early flowering of their careers. The young men? They were guitarist Rodney Jones, pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Jeff Watts. This is the music they made at those prophetic sessions back in 1983 -- music full of hopes, dreams and creativity." Edited June 12, 2007 by Eric Quote
marcello Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Here's some photos of Rodney Jones taken by me in 1977, when he was with Dizzy Gillespie: Quote
Joe G Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 I've been immersed in Rodney's sound over the last couple of weeks, having learned pretty much everything on the new Rodney Whitaker/Carl Allen CD "Get Ready", in preparation for the mini-tour I did with them. What he played sounded better and better to my ears the more I heard it. Damn good player. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 I like Rodney Jones' playing a lot, but he expressed some dissatisfaction with his earlier recording sessions - all one shot deals without much preparation. Was this released with his consent? Quote
mikeweil Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 (edited) Well, this is his current label, so it should be approved or even initiated by him. Edited June 13, 2007 by mikeweil Quote
Sundog Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 I like Rodney Jones' playing a lot, but he expressed some dissatisfaction with his earlier recording sessions - all one shot deals without much preparation. I know he was not happy with Soul Manifesto (Blue Note). However, he did Soul Manifesto Live! (Savant) on which he had more creative control. I've read that "Live" was really more of what he had in mind all along. A darn good funk record in my opinion. Quote

You're right - the liner notes of this CD suggests 2005 as it gives no recording date ( 1983). In his last words Rodney dedicates " the album to Kenny Kirkland and John Lewis, who both passed away too soon." Strange that there is no recording date. Thanks for your remarks !!
