montg
Looks like Verve is reissuing a few CDs to commemorate the the 50th anniversary of the Newport festival. (note that the Basie and Gillespie are just repackaged issues of material that is already out...i think the ella et al has been out too). apologies if this has been noted elsewhere Coleman Hawkins at Newport Ella, Billie, Carmen at Newport Oscar Peterson / Eldridge and Stitt Basie at Newport Dizzy at Newport interesting 2 CD collection of Newport performances Edited July 27, 2007 by montg

montg
Thanks for the heads up! My pleasure. Based on the number of artists on the complilation, it seems Norman Granz probably taped most of the '57 Festival. Everything from Cecil Taylor to Turk Murphy. I wonder how much is in the vaults. mikeweil
Seems Verve again missed the opportunity to do some tape vault research and add unreleased tracks or re-edit them to performance order ...
brownie
Verve released more a dozen of LPs from the 1956 Newport festival. Michel Ruppli's Verve discography does not list any unissued items. However it does not include the sets (George Shearing/Cannonball Adderley, plus Stan Kenton CDs) that came out on the Pablo label several years ago). Were there more? felser
The Ella/Billie/Carmen CD came out many years ago with several unreleased tracks. Nice to have and of great historical significance.
Big Al
Wow: great prices, hopefully nice sound, I'll probably be picking up a few of these!

Fer Urbina
Seems Verve again missed the opportunity to do some tape vault research and add unreleased tracks or re-edit them to performance order ... Exactly. AFAIK Granz taped *everything* from that Festival and the complete tapes still exist (possibly two sets). F
jazzbo
Yes. . . but does Verve own those tapes any longer? Brownie, I think whatever is on that Newport release was also in the Complete Verve Holiday box (and on the appropriate Dinah Washington box.) Nice stuff, the Carmen is good too. DMP
Picked up the Peterson - nice package, inexpensive - but not much extraneous information other than a small sticker on the shrink-wrap that says it was remastered.
