From the new site:

Welcome to the new Blue Note Records web site. Over the past several months we have been working on this new site and will continue to do so over the coming months and years. Like Jazz, the Blue Note site will be ever growing and ever expanding. That growth and expansion will include offering high quality DRM-free MP3 downloads of our full catalog of tracks, albums, out of print titles and unique releases exclusive to the Blue Note store.

Please make yourself at home, stick around for a while and make sure to come by every day. We plan to always have something new here for you. We would also like to hear from you - your involvement and participation is essential and encouraged. Send us an e-mail at bluenotefeedback@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you and we hope you love the new site, we built it for you.

This is a VERY interesting note in the Welcome to the New Blue Note Website page:

That growth and expansion will include offering high quality DRM-free MP3 downloads of our full catalog of tracks, albums, out of print titles and unique releases exclusive to the Blue Note store.

This would be an excellent way to put out random tracks or sessions that are too marginal to be issued as CDs, or too 'controversial'. My wish list would include (of course):

1. Rejected Wayne Shorter session 1970

2. Rejected Jackie McLean session 1968

3. Rejected KD/Grant Green session 1961

I'm sure there are more.

Bertrand.

What does "DRM-free" mean? Is that some sort of copy protection?

DRM = digital rights management

DRM-free means there is no copyprotection or other technically imposed restriction. The files can be played on any computer or portable player, without the device saying "you can't play it, because the files are limited for use on one PC or one player only" (as is the case with DRM-protected files)
