Rooster_Ties Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 (edited) Came home from work today to discover the front door of our house had been forcibly kicked in, and the entire interior door frame completely shattered in a hundred pieces, with lathe and plaster visible for 6 or 8 inches around half of what was left of the door frame (and bits of plaster everywhere). On the plus side, nobody was home when it happened, nobody got hurt, both our cats are fine (and they didn't get out), and the only thing they took was our home computer. They rifled through a bunch of things, but couldn't find anything else that was valuable enough for them to bother with. I'm sure they were in and out of the house in less than 3 minutes. I know others here have had home break-ins before, even quite recently (Joe, that I remember in particular), and in our case -- nothing was stolen that can't be replaced. Still, to walk in and discover our front door completely obliterated (well, the frame, not the door itself), was quite a shock, and it was well over an hour before I could find anyone who dared take on that kind of repair work. (Typing this on our 7-year old, "Windows ME" machine that hadn't been booted up in about a year -- since we'd gotten the brand new machine, which was the one that was stolen.) Jim Alfredson Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Sorry to hear that, Tom. Might be time to get a dog to go along with those two cats! Preferrably one with a big bark! Quote
Joe G Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Goddamn! He must have really needed a computer! Well, I do know how you feel, though I only had to get a shredded screen repaired. I've been planning on getting a more secure storm door; this comes as a reminder to get that thing ordered! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 28, 2007 Author Report Posted November 28, 2007 On the plus side, the replacement computer I'll eventually get will NOT be one with Windows Vista. I'm assuming I can somehow still get Win XP?? - and I mean preloaded from the manufacturer?? I hated having Vista on the machine I bought back in March '07, which is the one that was stolen. Quote
Spontooneous Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Sorry to hear it. Wow, somebody got away with this in broad daylight? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 28, 2007 Author Report Posted November 28, 2007 Sorry to hear it. Wow, somebody got away with this in broad daylight? Happened sometime between 8am and 4pm -- and probably before Noon (based on when some neighbors said they were in and out a bunch in the afternoon). Never any violent crime in our neighborhood (almost never, anyway), but car theft and home break-ins are not unheard of. Quote
Aggie87 Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 I'm assuming I can somehow still get Win XP?? - and I mean preloaded from the manufacturer?? Dell still offers brand new PCs with XP on them (or Vista). I'm guessing some other manufacturers do as well. Quote
7/4 Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 I'm assuming I can somehow still get Win XP?? - and I mean preloaded from the manufacturer?? I don't see why not. I just bought Win XP Pro and installed it on a new machine last week. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 how nice they came when you werent home. possessions are one thing:life and health another. Quote
Christiern Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Sorry to hear about this--I know how it feels. I hope you have insurance--I didn't. As for your computer, you could use this opportunity to get a Mac with Win XP. Quote
papsrus Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Seems to be a rise in bad news around here lately ... An article in our paper last week pointed out that there are many more people struggling to make ends meet these days (significant rise in demand for assistance, etc.). As people living paycheck to paycheck see their jobs disappear, they become more and more desperate. Robberies go up. Sounds like a pretty dramatic break-in. Why bust down the door? Weird. What did the cops say? Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Glad to hear that you are alright. Quote
GA Russell Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Sorry to hear of it Rooster. It may make you feel better to learn that CNet yesterday published an article saying that Vista is one of the worst inventions of all time! Quote
Free For All Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 (edited) It must have been the Hillary people! Geez, what a nice touch for the holiday season! Sorry to hear about this, RT- glad you and Mrs. RT are OK. I still believe that having one of those alarm company decals or signs (even if totally false) doesn't hurt. Yeah, I've got Vista on my new notebook. What is it you don't like about it, just curious? And how was the Brandon-band gig? (maybe better to repspond to the appropriate thread) Better days ahead my man! Edited November 28, 2007 by Free For All Quote
BruceH Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Scary. My heart goes out to you, but thank god it wasn't worse. Quote
Christiern Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Scary. My heart goes out to you, but thank god it wasn't worse. If there was a god, it would not have happened. Sorry, couldn't resist. I live in a pretty secure NYC apartment house, but if I lived in a private home, I think I would have a good alarm installed--especially these days. There have been an alarming (?) number of break-ins in the NYC area lately. Quote
MoGrubb Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Sorry to hear of your breakin. Maybe get the door jam replaced with a steel one, get a dead bolt lock and a door-brace type lock, bars on all the windows, burglar alarm, a Kudjo... Err, sorry, that must be my paranoia coming out. Anyhow, glad only the vista computer was taken. Quote
Parkertown Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Any personal info on the stolen PC? Man, I need to change my ways...all my PCs are set to enter passwords automatically. If my PC gets stolen, I would need to cancel credit cards, Paypal account, email, etc... Oh, sorry...as if you didn't have enough to worry about... :0 Quote
jazzbo Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Sorry to hear about this RT. I think there is some solace in "It could have been worse." Sometimes (trust me I know) you don't get the option to say that to yourself. . . . Quote

Just to be safe, you should change your password to any online site that you use that requires one, even this one. Paypal, your bank, credit cards, email, etc. They might be able to lift those from the computer, although who knows if they are smart enough to do that (might just be a smash n' grab). However, why risk it? Quote
