AndrewHill Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 Okay, you are probably thinking who cares? But I can only account for one date where he played muted and that's Dialogue. Does he play muted anywhere else, or am I having a brain fart? ( I know, I don't want this to turn into a "where's Lee Morgan playing muted' sort of thread, but dammit I need to know) Quote
Chas Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 How 'bout a whole album of Harmon-muted Freddie : He's also muted on Prophet Jennings from Hub-Tones , among others.... Quote
Free For All Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 A couple earlier instances that come to mind are "The More I See You" from Roll Call and "Blues For Duane" from Hub of Hubbard. The Blues For Miles session was a pretty late one, after his serious chop problems were in full bloom. The harmon mute is a good way to deal with a weak open-horn sound, which sadly I believe was the reason he did the whole session muted. Quote
AndrewHill Posted December 21, 2007 Author Report Posted December 21, 2007 How 'bout a whole album of Harmon-muted Freddie : He's also muted on Prophet Jennings from Hub-Tones , among others.... Well Jesus, if I would've just seen that cover alone, I would've never started this thread! Quote
AndrewHill Posted December 21, 2007 Author Report Posted December 21, 2007 Long of the short of it: nevermind :rsmile: Quote
JohnS Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 Wasn't the Enja album all muted? Quote
JSngry Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 Anybody remember the Harmon-muted solo he took on Quincy's version of "Killer Joe" from Walking In Space? Damn near a hit, that one was! The solo was even transcribed/published in Down Beat, as was the entire arrangement in one of their annuals. And I believe the album went gold. Quote
Dan Gould Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 This one is also another "all-muted" session. Pretty nice, if also pretty mellow, with Benny Green, Rufus Reid, Carl Allen, and on several tracks, Kenny Garrett in support. Quote
AndrewHill Posted December 21, 2007 Author Report Posted December 21, 2007 Thanks guys Now I got some listenin' to do. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 "Blues For Duane" from Hub of Hubbard. That's a real great track with a really good solo, and I'm not one of Freddie's followers - but I'll never give away that LP. Quote

It was of Topsy of course. Right label, wrong album. It's been a long time since I heard these albums. Quote
kh1958 Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 I saw Freddie 8 or 9 times over the years before his chops problems, and I do not recall ever seeing him play with a mute, or even have a mute with him. When he wanted a mellower sound, he would switch to his flugelhorn. Quote
JSngry Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 Ain't there the Harmon on the Bill Evans Interplay session? Funny thing about that one, I once made a cassette of the session in what I thought for some reason (did the 2-LP set give matrix #s) was session order and as it worked out, Freddie started the session on Harmon, his intonation going from pretty shaky to stable as he got warmed up, then he took the thing out to finish the session. If that's not how it went down, it sure made for a good tape anyway! Kinda surprised that nobody "recognizes" that "Killer Joe" solo though. Has Quincy's Walking In Space album gone from "everybody's heard it" to "nobody's heard it" in less than 40 years? Quote

Not if everybody sometimes listens to XM's "Real Jazz" channel, where it always shows up. Its last appearance, according to xmfan.com, was yesterday 12/20 at 6:15 pm et. Quote
Spontooneous Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 OK ... but are there recordings of Freddie soloing WITH PLUNGER other than "Ghetto Lights" on the Hutcherson date? Quote

Did not know that he was using a plunger! Maybe it's just his hand over the bell. But it sure sounds like a plunger effect was intended. And I can't think of any other examples. Anybody? Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 I'm not sure, but I think there may be some odd effects on "A soul experiment". I'll give it a play and see if there's any mnute stuff in there. MG Quote
