EKE BBB Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 Could anyone confirm that this boxed set was released in 1995? Thanks in advance! Quote
GregK Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 yep, 1995. I finally found a used copy about a month ago, for $45. Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 Very early '95, iirc--February, I think. I was a poor record-store clerk at the time, and even with my employee discount and credit for several Dolphy discs I was trading in, I was still $15 short--so I hit the plasma-center in order to make up the difference. 7/4 Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 That's dedication! I bought my new April 2001. Quote
captainwrong Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 Funny this should come up. I was just listening to this set the other day and ended up blogging about it, which turned into a rant about how I bought this set in '95 at BEST BUY! Good lord, I was in there the other day looking for one of the new Jutta Hipp RVG, which I thought they might have being as how it was Blue Note, and the jazz section was pathetic. Once upon a time, the Best Buy near my house was my source for jazz discs and if they didn't have it, Borders would for sure. Now, I don't even bother. It's straight to Amazon or a dozen others because no one caries squat anymore. But yeah...sorry for the derail. I never thought it would be remarkable that I bought this at Best Buy, but 13 years later, it really is. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 But yeah...sorry for the derail. I never thought it would be remarkable that I bought this at Best Buy, but 13 years later, it really is. That is remarkable, in many ways. I've been eyeballing a copy at my local bookstore, but they still want full retail+ for it... over $100, if I remember correctly. This copy has been on their shelves for at least two years now. Quote

I remember seeing Coltrane's Interstellar Space, among many others (that one stands out because, you know) at Best Buy. I bought the RVG Wayne Shorter All-Seeing Eye there! The good old days Quote
captainwrong Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 I bought most of my really out Trane discs at BB. Either there or Borders. Ahh...the pre-internet days. Quote

It scares the friggin' crap out of me that we are talking about the "pre-internet days"....seriously, both GregK and Captain Wrong... we are all talking about 10 years ago or less? I make my living by keeping up on "technology", but some (too many?) things are moving ridiculously fast! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Guess we are now in pre-grid days. Quote

sidewinder Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 (edited) Bought it in '95. Bought mine in '95 too. Played it end-to-end several times through those first few weeks. Getting the Five Spot material together in good sound was a revelation, along with things like 'Trane Whistle'. Still one of my favourite box sets. Next up purchase after that was the Joe Henderson box. Edited April 14, 2008 by sidewinder Quote
Durium Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 ERIC DOLPHY That Bass Clarinet hits me !! Eric Dolphy At The Five Spot Keep swinging Durium Quote
Shrdlu Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 Hey, Thanks for posting the link to the two Youtube clips of Eric playing. I have never seen footage of him before. His bass clarinet solo is amazing. He adds so much to the Andrew Hill session on that horn, too! Quote

Shrdlu Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 That really IS good, Allen. I used to copy it on my alto in my teens. Quote
six string Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Heads up folks. For those who don't own the box, Amazon Marketplace (Newbury's Comics) has it for $30.00 (new). I just ordered one even though I think I have just about all of it already on vinyl. It'll be nice to have it all together and the price is right. Quote

I just ordered one, too. OK... who's next?? Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 is the sound better than the original OJCs? same? worse? Quote
sidewinder Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 (edited) I've gone for it. Figured a spare copy of this wonderful set would be nice to have, for equivalent of £15. The main objective though was to get Bill Evans - The Secret Sessions at $29.99 They also have some more copies of 'The Last Waltz' at $29.99 too. Thanks for the tip, six string Edited April 30, 2008 by sidewinder Quote
