jazzbo Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 is the sound better than the original OJCs? same? worse? When I've compared, a bit "better" (it's a bit sharper, less thick sounding (?)) Quote

The RVG Remaster of "Out There" sounds great to these ears... presumably better than both the OJC and the box set? Quote
six string Posted April 30, 2008 Report Posted April 30, 2008 Heads up folks. For those who don't own the box, Amazon Marketplace (Newbury's Comics) has it for $30.00 (new). I just ordered one even though I think I have just about all of it already on vinyl. It'll be nice to have it all together and the price is right. AWESOME! Thanks for the tip, six string! I just ordered one, too. OK... who's next?? I (we) got lucky. After following this thread for the last two days I decided to have a looksy for a cheap copy and bam! first place I looked was Amazon. I'm not chasing any other cd versions of this music though. Between the vinyl and this box, I'll spend my money elsewhere. While typing this DHL delivered my 3cd set of Lee Morgan at the Lighthouse! Wooh Hoo! Quote
Uncle Skid Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 OK... who's next?? I jumped on... Somehow, I just knew you would be at this party! Where's Ron S.? Quote
Free For All Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 Does Conn have this? We'll have to listen to it at a chat session. :rsmile: Quote

trane_fanatic Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 Just ordered the Dolphy & the 2 Evans boxes. I had bought almost all of the Dolphy material on OJC CD last year too. Same thing happened with the Henderson box. Guess it's time to sell those. Hate when that happens. But this is too good a price to pass up. Had to change my shipping address from work to home though. Don't wanna get in trouble. Quote
trane_fanatic Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 I've gone for it. Figured a spare copy of this wonderful set would be nice to have, for equivalent of £15. The main objective though was to get Bill Evans - The Secret Sessions at $29.99 They also have some more copies of 'The Last Waltz' at $29.99 too. Thanks for the tip, six string Yup, all three boxes for under 100 bux shipped is sweeeeet. Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 Just ordered THE LAST WALTZ--my thanks as well. Hard to resist at that price. Quote
GregK Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 which one of those Evans boxes do I want? I have very little besides the 60s Village Vanguard material, so I know nothing about his later years. Quote
JSngry Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Yeah, I feel bad for Good O-Board Citizen Greg M who might yet someday get confused with Cyber Stalker/Bad Egg/Banned Member ("It's ok, I'm with the banned!") GregM. Quote
Free For All Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Damn! It's getting all "sheets of Greg" around here! Quote
JSngry Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Not from me. When they said that everybody digs Bill Evans, they hadn't asked me. Sorry. Quote

mgraham333 Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 (edited) All good things come to an end. The price for the Dolphy is up to $49.99 and Secret Session is up to $39.99 at Newbury (via Amazon). Edited May 3, 2008 by mgraham333 Quote

If you can only get one, get the Secret Sessions. . . spans decades and has some incredible playing. The first time I played this set my late wife Helen, who generally doesn't even notice a piano trio recording playing, kept coming in and sitting down and snuggling with me to listen. Not sure what that means other than it reaches out and suggests attention. Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 I'll second Lon's rec--I already have SECRET SESSIONS and went for LAST WALTZ only because it was so cheap (and because, God help me, I'm enough of an Evans devotee to opt for that much late-period BE). If you already have some of the Vanguard and pre-Vanguard material, SECRET SESSIONS is a good overview of the 1960s and early 70s. It's a much broader view of Evans' career than WALTZ, which covers gigs done just a week or so before his death. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 I'm really looking forward to 'Secret Sessions' - and Lon's comments have wetted the appetite further. Have been diggin' the 'Last Waltz' box too - particularly fascinating having seen this group only weeks before in London on a couple of consecutive nights and the effect of hearing the box set was to take me back what is now nearly 30 years ( ). It was indeed a most memorable trio. Quote
